Hi guys,

i want to order a new graphic card to get faster render and to get bigger scenes in my vram. I looked around at the actual gpu-market and found an interesting comparison between the latest cards at a CUDA PMC benchmark, its only in german but if you just focus on the pictures i hope you can understand what i want to explain:

http://www.tomshardware.de/geforce-gtx- ... 92-22.html

In most cases of the first three tests the "old" gtx 580 is relatively close the the gtx titan but it only costs a third (about ~300 €)! A negative point to the gtx 580 is, it has only 1.5GB of VRam :(
But how do you think about that?

Actually i am using a gtx 470, do you think it would be a big upgrad for me?

1. Gtx 580 and a Titan is not realy close in terms of speed. But a 580 is a great card.
2. A 590 will be close to a Titan in terms of speed (maybe 10-15 % slower)
3. A 580 was available with 3GB VRam

If you are looking mostly for speed get a 590.
If you are looking for scene size get a 580 3GB.
If money doesn't matter get one or more Titans.
A 680 4GB could also be an option...

If I would decide on budget, I would get a cheap 580 even if it would be 1.5 GB.
If your job pays the investment back, then get a Titan and you could add more in the future.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Sadly the GTX 580 is only available with 1.5GB, and the GTX 590 isn't even available anymore (just one reseller who require 650€ )

Do you know where i can find some octane-render graphic card comparison for the gtx 590?

I would check out the latest benchmarks on the forum.

But there is one thing to keep in mind:
The older Octane Versions are not optimized for the newer 6 Series (New Kepler).
The latest Octane releases bring optimized performance to the new Kepler architecture.
So when I see that the 580 is faster then a 680 on tomshardware that means that this benchmark is based on an older Octane Version.
How many slots are free on your Mobo?
2 x 670s 4GB could be a nice upgrade too if you have 2 free PCIe slots...

Okay, thank you for reminding me.

That is sadly not possible with my budget, i don't want to spend more then 300 €. So the best graphic card i can afford is the gtx 680. On the first tests of this card i read that it is actually slower then the gtx 580, you said something about optimized performance so is the gtx 680 now faster then the gtx 580? Otherwise i will go for the 50€ cheaper gtx 580.

get 670, better value, than 680.. speed doesn't differ so much to be noticible, it runs a bit cooler, less heat = less noise.. /consider leaving rig overnight if needed/. diff in Kepler and Fermi is texture count too.. /personally I do have 670 & very hapy with it../ 580 on the other hand is faster a bit, but,..more hot, louder, less ram, less textures..older architecture..- less future friendly =) unless You can get it very cheep.

cheers

I think the best videocard for octane at this moment with not so high price is GTX 770 4GB. price little bit more then 300 €.

770 is upgraded 680 model with few tweeks & diff soft inside to manage temperature/overclocking + better cooling unit.

I would strongly recomend GTX580 for the moment. The trick is that, you have to cool it but it`s very easy and cheap. Hybrid cooling like Asetek 740GF (for 70$ at ebay) or Arctic Accelero Hybrid (about 100$ at newegg), it can stay silent and cool. My GTX580s are running at 930 MHz now using Asetek 740GF and with 3x580 and a 680, I can reach about 17.8 Ms/sec in the benchmark scene . A titan makes about 7Ms/sec. This roughly means that 2 GTX580 can reach 1 Titan and its is half down cheaper.
