Hi all,

I'm trying to patch an animated scene and trying to figure out the correct workflow for matte objects. I can't seem to find the correct threads to do this.

Here's the situation:

A1/ We've rendered an animation clip, but we need to change textures on the moving characters. I would like to render the characters only, in order to composite them back in After Effects. See attached.

A2/ We've applied matte diffuse materials to everything except the moving characters. See attached.

A3/ When we knock out the alpha channel, we are not getting a clean plate. See attached.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be tremendous!

best,
O

Seems matte objects cast shadows to itself. We will think how to avoid this issue.

Hi,

For this i don't see the need for the matte material, if all you want is to change the characters textures (the characters shape and shadows are already there and are not changed).

Just make all other materials 100% transparent (0 opacity).

Thanks
Chris.

Won't the lighting on the characters change then? I.e. Sunlight/hdri light will pass through the transparent materials and hit the characters?

I tried putting the materials at zero opacity, but the lighting and shadows completely changed. The environment light basically came through all the objects.

By matting everything but the character, I was hoping to retain the shadows/lighting from the rendered scene.

Ahh, yes, sorry for leading you up the garden path there.

Obviously i didn't think that through :?

If you use the material ID deep_channel_kernel mode (one flat color per material), you should be able to isolate the character in post.

Thanks
Chris.
