I was and still am a new bee.
And in the beginning I had similar frustrations in daz octane plugin.
And wanted to stop using octane.
but after some time I started getting my way around octane.
its a deferent way of thinking than we are used to in our own personal 3d program.
its always a Learning curve.
but to solve this problem is to slow down.
your new post can wait.
why are we in such a hurry to make our 3d post, it can wait until we are more comfortable in octane.
and now after a few weeks , I feel at home in octane version for daz studio plugin.
I left the daz way of thinking and just embraced the octane way of thinking.
its not like one way is better that the other way, its deferent.
and the beauty of octane is its simplicity, and ability to work in so many deferent 3d software's. so this way you can have the same professional results in render in all your favorite, 3d software. for me I use octane in POSER 2014 / DAZ STUIDO 4.6 / AND OCTANE STANDALONE , to render obj or other object in 3d.this way all my render no matter what software will be always consistent .

my latest work in octane render (daz stuidio) (if I were to use daz studio no way same result)
http://giovanino.deviantart.com/art/Ret ... -377147593

and this in octane for poser 2014
http://giovanino.deviantart.com/art/In- ... -373958458

you see same great render in all the 3d software one uses consistent results.

so to me ,
1: yes please do put more effort on making a manual before you make the software or plugins available

and lets all slow down and enjoy octane , its super great. and keep up the great job :D :D

Giovanni Im glad Octane is working for you now.

But as a professional in the video industry your suggestion to...

"and lets all slow down and enjoy octane "

is not very helpful or realistic. I have to say that when learning new software to be used at work, time is of the essence. And the great tuts for C4D are very helpful learning that complex software. If pros are going to take Octane seriously, then there need to be well done tuts for it as well.

Now if you are a casual user or hobbyist this makes total sense. But With Adobes new inclusion of C4D with AE, I am one of thousands of folks that need to learn this ASAP, since C4D rendering really needs speeding up :D

I do apologize if I have misinterpreted your message.

hi,
basically you are comparing services from old big sw companies with a little young sw house. in my opinion is quite unfair especially considering the prices of the products.
maxon is on the market from about 25 years, adobe even more, octane is a three years old sw, otoy has bought it only one year ago and the c4d-plugin is about six months old only.
about the plugin, it's basically the best way of using octane with c4d, but, if you don't have the basic of octane, could be quite difficult to understand how it works.
here you can find some video tutorials about octane standalone:
http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=51
http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=7566
if you catch the basic philosophy of lighting and shaiding inside of octane standalone, it's surely more easy to find the same parameters in the c4d plugin.
the workflow is not exactly the same ( in the plugin the node graph editor is not present for now) but you have several advantages in respect to the standalone version.
just an example, if you do animations with octane via c4d+exporter, the entire scene must loaded in all the gpus every frame. this means to waste a lot of time, but with the c4d plugin you can greatly optimise this section saving a lot render time, and this is a must for professional works ;)

You should really look into the Standalone GUI first, the C4D plugin is still in development and gets lots of improvements on a daily basis. Learning how Octane was intended to be used will help you a lot and you should be able to understand all the important basics within a few days.
The C4D plugin will get more similar to the standalone GUI but that stuff takes time.

Though I have to say, if you dont like software that hasn't a highly polished UX and UI you should not buy beta software. There will be the day where Octane and all its third party plugins will have a great UI and tightly integrated workflow with all the 3D tools out there but that stuff takes time and isn't available in the first version of a software and specially not a beta plugin.

I dont have the time or interest in learning the stand alone. You are right, I will return to using Octane when its out of beta. Silly of me to think it could be used for clients projects.
I will try using it again when its ready for prime time.

+1 ;)

I am pretty useless when it comes to art, graphics packages, etc., but I know that and I know that to get the best out of complex system (and let's face it, graphics can get very complex!) I'd need to take the time to read, at the very least, the bits of the manual that relate to any issues or questions I have. Having been a systems programmer for way too many years I am also very much aware that you do not use beta software for production systems.

I strongly suspect all this is a miscommunication over language boundaries, but please be aware that saying, in effect, "this beta, not yet complete, rather complex product for which I have yet to bother to read the manual does not do what I think it should do in the way I think it should do it" is not going to attract sympathy or a fan-club! ;)

For clarification. I read the manual. It, like any manual it says what things do, not how best to utilize them. They are great reference but not great learning tools for me YMMV.

Ive read many manuals over my 30 year career as an editor. And they are no substitute for visual tutorials which are almost none existent for C4D Octane.

As a working professional I must delegate my time to using the best resources. Learning the stand alone which is not a part of the work flow I will use with the plug in is a waste of my time.I would gladly watch as many video tutorials on the plug in as I could get my hands on.

FYI Im not here for a fan club. Just answers to questions and sources of frustration.
As a beta tester for Adobe CS6. AJA and Boris I have a strict policy of not using beta software for client projects. Signing off until this beta is a full release.

if you are waiting a "make a good shadow" or "put a brilliant jewellery" button, it will be not.
Plugin when to come final stage, main concept will be same.

This page and video shows most features, it's good start point for a common user
