How 2 reduce OBJ with multiple textures to 1 texture?
I.e. I have an OBJ of books with a texture for every book,
This way I have 15 textures used for one row of books.
When I have more objects like this I will have too much textures for Octane to handle.
Is there a way to make one UVmap texture for the whole row?

i don't know a quick solution, but a long one will be like this:

make one texture from all those book covers in photoshop, make a grid and put them side-by-side,
in 3d soft that you use you have to unwrap UV's to every book and position them as you did with textures in photoshop, then make 1 material and apply to all the books.

Hi lixai, thanx for your thoughts :D

I think I can do this workflow in Artlantis.
or maybe Cinema4d (but I find it hard to learn).
Maybe I get it, but what exctly do you mean with unwrapping UV?

In Modo you bake the entire OBJ/scene to a new texture map.

Thanx lixai for showing.. Now I know what I am looking for... A UV unwrapper like UVMapper.com.
but this is not a short way

Hi Zay, that is a short way. Too bad Modo is not free software.
I tried in Cinema 4D but could not figure out to do it like Modo.
Maybe other software like Blender?
And maybe Sketchup with a plugin/addon?

Use sketchup Free Version to do this

link - http://www.sketchup.com/

1) As said above, put all textures your going to use into a grid onto one sheet using Photoshop / gimp etc.

2) load the models into sketchup free...use obj import ( Free sketchup plugin) or the built in 3DS / Collada import options see link - http://rhin.crai.archi.fr/rld/index.php

3) Assign ,position and rotate the textures on that sheet to the various objects in the model . see youtube video for explanation .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye-D8UpRD8k

for projecting textures onto curved surfaces see youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcIMTJ99mZc

once that's done and the UV mapping is finalized then.....

4) download and use Tigs obj export only option contained within the sketchup to Octane exporter to go back to your modelling app.

or model and texture within sketchup.

hope that helps

In maya you would do it like this:

* Combine all the separate models into a single model.
* Move and re-scale all the separate UV maps so they do not overlap and then place
them in the 0-1 space
* Save the combined mesh OBJ
* create various maps (diffuse, bump, normal, AO, Spec etc etc)

then in Octane
* load up your single combined mesh
* apply your maps

Thanx for the help guys,

I must be able to use just one texture (with all images) within Artlantis or Sketchup the way you described.

First I want to find out if it is not possible to bake the OBJ with multiple textures to one model with one texture like Zay does in Modo.. That is the easiest way, because I already have this OBJ with all textures correctly. It seems a hazzle to start from scratch again.

Unwrapping UV's and apply the textures to the unwrapped image is also very interesting.,
Especially for complexed shapes.
I must be able to do that with Cinema4D, but I have to start and learn C4D first and I do not have a 'click' with it yet.
There is stuff out there that might do the job... I have found Lithunwrap and UVunwrapping.
Maybe someone has experience with a nice Unwrapper?
