Reflectivity in material creation is different then the Diffuse / Glossy / Specular categories.

I see no way to create materials like hammered metal or mirror like materials. Am I missing something?

Material type: In a simple way, you can change material type to glossy that is for reflective materials. Glossy has specular property for reflections. I advice to you check this manual and
standalone pages: http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Cinema4D/?page_id=122

Also you can use mix material for mixing different type materials.

I appreciate that English is a second language to you, but what you just wrote makes no sense to me at all.

Does the convert materials function not work? I have tried several beautiful presets that when converted look terrible.

Convertion works but c4d materials has no same pairs to be converted. C4D and Octane materials completely has different concept. Some basic attributes has similar octane material properties as diffuse, bump, specular, normal. But opacity not works as c4d materials. for this reason convertion not too simple task.
