can someone tell me what the latest version of OctaneRender is that will function with my GTX 285 card?

The latest version that supports your card is 1.18 (http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=33323), with the exception of PMC. Due to some obscure CUDA compiler problem, the PMC kernel will not work on your GPU in any version since 1.11.

You can pick up a 460 on Craigslist or eBay for $50-$75...

A 580 for $200...

And anything in between would completely smoke your 285
