I did see something once, or rather the Octane team posted it, about doing subdivisions on the graphics card at 'render level'
not sure what came of it, it did look pretty good though...
kinda like Vray subdiv

Master Zap owns a patent on this technology. (Not sure how Modo or other renderers have gotten away with it)
