Hi all,
I'm new to this software, downloaded the demo 2 days ago rendered one of my models (modeled in Modo):

I have some concerns I would like to have commented before I decide to buy this software:

1) I currently have a Nvidia 9800GTX+ (512mb VRAM). I don't intend do do much more complex scenes but I'm afraid I'll run out of memory quickly when I increase the render resolution (not possible to try this in the demo). The model in this example is about 200k polys and uses two 4k textures. There was a lot of VRAM left but I noticed that the menus etc became sluggish (I have a Quad-core 2,66, 4gig memory, Vista64 system with the above video-card).

So is there any point in buying this with my current video card?

2) I found it _extremely_ irritating that the hierarchy in the material editor was expanded every single time I changed a parameter in one of the materials. Scrolling up and down in the hierarchy all the time is unworkable. Is this error present in the version you buy?

EDIT:Updated images

Hi,

reply 1: it depends on what you want to render, 512MB is quite low, if you intend to render models/products this is doable. the user interface slows down because octane uses your GPU completely, thereby not giving the operating system much time to access the display. we're working on improving this, however adding a 2nd GPU and using that one for Octane completely solves the issue. what you could do is start with your 9800GTX, and later add a 2nd GTX400 series with more vram, and use the 9800 for display and the GTX400 for rendering, and you'll have a lot of octane render power, lots of video ram and a smooth userinterface so you can work in other apps while rendering in the background with octane.

reply 2: this is on our list of todo's for the upcoming 2.2 release. however, if you use the material picker and pick your materials straight off your render, you don't need to scroll any large lists of nodes.

EDIT: nice renders by the way, very detailed textures.

Hi,
thank you for quick the quick response!

1) Yes initially I only intend do render simple scenes like the above but maybe at the double resolution (2k). Pure personal hobby.

2) Thanks for the tip - missed that feature.

btw..if anybody wishes you can download this model from my site (mesh + textures):

No I just exported from modo without changing any export options (I run Modo401). I just set up the materials in modo and made sure that a .mtl file was created apart from the .obj.

Hi,
I have the same question, but for Rhino. Is there a best setting to export .obj to octane? Because I have some problems...

I have done the classic set with 3 cubes on a surface. If i don't put these objects on theirs layers, when I open Octane and I import the .obj file all is fine and I can put on them the materials and set the scene.

But...if I had 100 objects in my project isn't possible to work with this method. I must use the layers!
And here is the problem: if I use the layers in Rhino and I export the scene in .obj, when I open Octane all my objects are black and I have only a node.

Perhaps Rhino hasn't the best way to save in .obj like the other 3d program or perhaps I mistake something... :-(

...and the result is I can't study Octane before to buy it! This is the big problem!!!

Radiance say me this:

rhino uses a special syntax that octane does'nt read.

we will add these fixes to our next release.
for now, with 2.1, i suggest you use the technique, eg going through modo.

f you want you can export to blender( is free) in obj format whit layer and after you export in obj file to octane

Thanks Daniel!

Do you use Modo for 3d modellation?I can imagine that you use layers without no problem...
