if it doesn't work, then it's time to modify the geometry ;)
octane is super sensitive to this value, never thought to ask to the developer if there is something that can be done during the exporting process

Thanks beppe

Back to the phong issue again. I tried everything to import this correctly from 3DS MAX as a FBX, then as an object. Tried bringing the phong angle down to 20 and still this. Any ideas?

i'm not sure (it's extremely dark), but it seems more a scale problem than a phong issue this time
what are the dimensions of the car?

Sorry I dont actually know where to find that info. I generally download a model and then import it into C4d but I dont really know how to set a scale. I have been meaning to find how so I can import all this correctly into the scene. Does this have anything to do with importing in Meters? I know the standalone version expects this, is it the same with Octane live render? Do I need to import everything into C4D in the meters scale for it to show up correctly in the Live render window? I have been importing in centimeters, millimeters, or scaling if it did not look right.

You may be right, I did scale the building down a little in the last photo. Here it is again w/o scaling and it looks better.

the setting of the scale is crucial in octane, otherwise camera, emitters and materials doesn't behave as expected ;)
try to import a 1 meter cube into c4d and standalone and verify the scale, i always work in cm with no issue.
