8 GPU, how?

How can you have 8 GPUs? What kind of external case/controller do you need?

My motherboard allows 4 GPUs, how can I add 4 more?

Is there anybody here using a pci-e expansion chassis?

Cubix? Magma? StarTech? Netstor?

one Guy in this forum bought and expansion backplate /almost that big../ & if I remember good..paid 1,5k$.

for that You need wheather extention to conect to Your mashine or..host board. depending on parts You're using..everything sums up fast =)

let's say:

backplate 1,5k$, host board /just assume 1k$???/, 2x Xeons - 2or3k$, RAM.., SSDs.. & last but not least all the GPUs!!! +case etc..

so I just gues, You would end up with five figure with 1, 2 or even 3 in front /depending on what GPUs You're going to choose =p

why you need 8 gpus?

with 4 GTX Titans you can build a powerful workstation that you can leave under your desk and you can sleep too. Working with the Tyan 8gpus barebone means to have a well cooled and soundproof room.

Yes, I already have 4 titans (airflow).
The other day I had to do a long video with lots of animation, orginally I was going to render @1080,
but because the large number of frames I ended up rendering @720 to finish on time and to give me a chance to do color correction, editing, etc,
so I am thinking it would help me a lot if I have more cards.

My motherboard has 7 pci-e slots, so now I am thinking about the smallest external case, just big enough to hold 4 gtx titans,
and run some pcie extension cables from my motherboard to that case.
So I would keep 3 GTX Titans in my motherboard/computer case and 4 GTX Titans in an external case, maybe those could be water cooled.

Do you think it could work?

Do you think you can overclock the water cooled Titans higher than the airflow Titans?

The other day I was reading here of someone overclocking a water cooled card, memory @+500, I can't do that on the airflow cards
That's probably too much but it shows how far you can go with the water cards.

OCing depends whitch company GPUs You do have
& more than that wheather You won in that silicon lotery..

for Titans, realistically, You can have +140 & +500 for memory..
keep in mind diminishing returns from every higher overclock..

sometimes it's better to leave everything under air.
You'll see 85-90 degree instead of 40-50..
value wise..air sometimes is a better deal..

WC looks better, sometimes extend longevity, but..
setup, maintainance & prise should be considered.


as for Your case, You should remember that PCIe extensions..
..are limited in lengh, so =) Your small case might not work.

I'd probably make some custom case for such project =)
& just if You have spare ~2k$..only then think about..
..puting this beast under water =)

buy the second workstation.

If your psu or disks fail you have your first node working...

don't put everything in one single case except you got many backup workstations.
