Yes, very tricky, that's why I agree that a render region feature could help solving this issue... With a render region, shadows and reflections of surrounding object would be kept on my changed material, but the render time would decrease because of the small portion to render..
I guess, at this stage, I will just have to buy a new computer or graphic card and speed up my render times while changing materials to specific elements. Or use a renderfarm service. Is there a renderfarm for Octane?
Render only one material?
