Show your hardware, software configuration and a standard bench mark screen shot.
I hope, this thread would be a nice information when you purchase your next machines.

The standard benchmark file is here, http://www.refractivesoftware.com/bench ... chmark.zip

example:
Octane Beta 2.1 + WinXP 32 + GTX295 + i7 950 + 4GB = 234 seconds/Ksamples
And a standard bench mark screen shot.
(where, the result means it takes 234 seconds to reach 1000 samples)

Current rankings, configurations and performances are as follows;

01 : YoonKyung : Octane Beta 2.2RC1 + WinXP 64 + 2x XEON + 12 GB + 8x GTX480 = 29 thwak (20.97 Ms/s)
02 : iknowmedia : Octane Beta 2.1 + Evga 790i + Quad Core @9550 4x 2833mhz + 8GB + Zotac GTX 480 (OC) = 132 thwak (4.37 Ms/s)
03 : Metalpiss : Octane Beta 2.1 + Win7 64 + GTX480 + i7 860 + 8GB = 149 thwak (3.8-3.9 Ms/s)
04 : DavidT : Octane Beta 2.1 + Windows 7 64-bit + GTX 470 + i7 920 + 12 GB = 185 thwak (3.08 Ms/s)
05 : PeterCGS : Octane Beta 2.1RC + I7 [email protected] + 16GB + Vista Ultimate SP2 + 480GTX 1.5GB = 248 thwak (2.37 Ms/s)
06 : Rogue : Octane Beta 2.1RC + I7 [email protected] 12GB Vista Ultimate SP2 + 280GTX@615mhz (240 cuda cores) 1GB + driver 197.45 = 283 thwak (2.07 Ms/s)
07 : YoonKyung : Octane Beta 2.1RC + i7 920 + one GPU of GTX295 + Octane Beta2.1RC + WinXP 32bit = 393 thwak (1.47 Ms/s)
08 : thwak : Octane Beta 2.1RC + GTS 240 + 195.36 drivers + 3.0 Toolkit + Ubuntu Karmic x64 + Dual Boot + 197.13 drivers + WinXP32 w/3Gb switch = 767 thwak.
09 : pixym : Octane Beta 2.1RC + Mac Pro Dual Xeon 5462 (2,8ghz Octo cores) + Win XP64 SP2 + 8GB RAM + Nvidia 8800GT = 0.67 Ms/s.

Where, 'thwak' means 'seconds/Ksamples'.
And the unit 'thwak' comes form thwak's ID. ;)

You have 4 GTX 295 on one machine? It's summer now, does your electric bill for your AC shoot through the roof?

Yes, the heat was big problem, so, I added a water cooling system.
Now, it's cool and quiet without AC, and the electric bill of it was lower than that of AC.
I hope, this information would be useful to you when you build more powerful machines. :)

How are you measuring the Msam/sec? This is a pretty dynamic number that fluctuates as the image is being rendered. My GTS 240 fluctuates between 0.6 and 0.9 Ms/s as it renders this .ocs.

Perhaps a better way would be to render to a certain Maxsample number and note the time it took to get there? For example, recreate the .ocs in this benchmark file to have maxsamples set to 1000. Then you could just kick it off and when it stopped the time would be your benchmark.

I got to 500 samples in 6:45.

thwak,

Thank you for your proposal, and that seems to be more reasonable ..
I will change the rule above. :)

Right now you have invented a new unit, measuring render performance of a machine..
May i use your ID for that new unit?

Image

2.07Ms/sec, no real fluctuations during rendering. 2:28 secs to reach 523 samples/px. See my sig below for hardware.

My one GPU of GTX295 + Octane Beta2.1 + WinXP 32bit reached 1000 samples at 6:33 as following screen shot.
And the megasmples/sec was 1.47~8 .. :)

Octane beta2.1 + GTX480 + WinXP 64 + i7 950 = 2.45 Megasamples/sec (Rogue's GTX280 was 2.07) :?: :?: :?:
May be, it is not optimized yet. Anyway, it takes 238 seconds to reach 1000 samples.

Yoon, you have just to open the bench scene and click on the scene in the graph editor, then screen grab the MSamples/sec displayed value, no need to render the scene…
Rad told, Octane needs optimization for fermi architecture as you can see here:
