I upgraded my vray 2.3 to 2.4. I'm testing vray rt 2.4 which has support instancing (forest pro) ,some speed improvements and more support for different material types.

Vrayrt may be a very powerful tool but it's just like octane's beta period 2 years ago. Yes it's very fast but not stable for me. Realtime updating has still problems. For example when u put an ies light to scene vray rt updates this but with wrong intensity and you can not change intensity realtime. You must close vray rt and re-open it for see your new light's true values.

Cuda support is working well but when you use cuda kernel there is more problems against CPU kernel. Realtime camera moving is not work well in cuda mode especially with using forest pro or instancing.

In my opinion vray is going very slow in this race.Infact if vray could be first in GPU rendering 2-3 years ago, other render engines has no luck against it.But now vray is out of race in my opinion.

I'll put some octane vs vrayrt 2.4 images soon.

now that's interesting =) looking forward some news from You.

yeah it's a bit of a pain for Chaos group to rerwrite the code for GPUs
I believe someimes it's easier to create progams from scratch, so..

I bet for GPU render engines to tke a lead in a year or two, rather then
GPU accelerated of mixed / that runs in both modes =)

cheers

this was the same conclusion from me when testing vray RT a year ago :) - nothing much changed, buggy, crashes, awkward to use - octane has a lot more features

I did it two years ago yet.

For biased render vray is unbeatable, the gpu side needs some work but is not bad.

Otoy is light years beyond iray, live and vray rt...but Octane is not perfect.

None gpu based rendering software is perfect.

The strongest Octane's part is the Metropolis algorithms (pmc).

None of the mentioned softwares uses pmc (or variant), probably the imminent release of Live (Arion) will use a sort of pmc.

I told to Vlado (Chaos) to implement it.

The fact is that Otoy demonstrated the gpu cloud render feature. It works and I think that Nvidia will support Otoy to develop the best cuda kernel. This is the future of rendering.

I'm in contact with the Random Control, Chaos Group and Otoy teams. I think they do a good work.

I invested all my money in gpu hardware and software, we are pioneers, next cg artists generations will benefit of our research.
