I think i have found what is the problem. Please, try the following workaround and tell me if works:

1) Be sure Max is closed.
2) Rename the file Octane3dsmax.dlr in the max plugins folder to any other name. For example zOctane3dsmax.dlr
3) Run Max and render.
To see again the trees in the viewport I have to click "manual update" in the display planel. I see the tree preview in the viewport, I hit render....no trees rendered...as soon as I hit render the trees are deleted from the preview.
This is a side effect of the main problem, because Octane is not properly calling the Forest interface. Just click Display->Update in Forest to rebuild.

also - how about a properly prepared scene to test on - and upload it here - right now I don't know if I'm setting up something wrong or there are bugs from 3dmax octane or itoo

Thank you,
the trick works but I have always to rename the Octane dlr, because after a working session if I re-open the scene all trees will disappear. Then I close Max, rename the dlr, open the scene again and I'm able to render and work with the trees.
I think it's a bug....

Yes, it is bug. I have sent to Karba the technical details. I hope he can reproduce and fix it.

If crashes happen at rendering, probably it is an Octane issue. You can check it converting your items to stand-alone objects, using Forest Tools, and removing Forest from the scene.

Regarding materials, there are several open threads about it.
