Any news about the progress of implementing the possibility to load a BG image ?

We seem to want this more than most folks...

And like myself, you probably would just like some confirmation that it is at least
being taken into consideration... or better yet, being working on diligently.

I am hoping for not only bg image, but that its ignored by renderer - and toggling on/off
would not affect render. And once it has been implemented and stable, I would like them
to take it further and give some real compositing capability. Like ability to add BG pins to
left end of render target and FG pins to right end render target - and comp as many alpha
images as you like. And ability to have bg and fg be affected by post processing.

How cool would that be?

thanks for your thoughts Frank,
I know this is something they are working on but since it is an important feature to line up images with the correct perspective and do compositing I am curious when the will publish this.
For me it would be enough if the BG image works basically the same way like the bg HDRI without emitting light.
So keeping the alpha channel, switching it on and off and affecting post effects would be all included...

I would have no problem if it must be the same pixel dimensions.. and gets stretched
if not. And possibly show some indication somewhere if it is not currently at the same
dimensions as target.

or it could crop the longer side and indicate that there is a mismatch in proportion...

Because a billboard need only be 2 triangles it ought to be possible to hard code in fg and bg planes that automatically expand from nearly zero - virtually invisible ordinarily - to the dimensions of a loaded texture and appropriately centred relative to the camera view. It would then be a matter of adjusting the fg/bg mesh positioning to suit the users preference. I suppose that could be accomplished by the usual rot, scale xyz nodes.
