Since saving images is disabled on the demo and I am trying out the animation rendering in Poser. I get an error notice. I assume (hope) that is caused by the fact that I can't save an image. Correct? Thank you, in advance, for your time and advice.

Hi Pete

Yes, because saving is disabled, when you try to animate in the Poser plugin it pops an error trying to save the rendered frame. This obviously doesn't happen in the full version :-)

Thank you, Paul. I'm on the verge of buying this. My only hang up is, though Octane does a great job on single figures. When it comes to sets like Poser's warehouse or other poly-heavy scenes....it freezes the computer and I have to do a brute-force reboot. This desktop may be too old to cut it. I have an nvidia GTX 260 with the latest drivers (314.07).

Hi Pete

I haven't heard of any freezing issues before. If you post or email me the octaneplugin.log file from your Poser temp folder (after a freeze) then I can tell you what happened.

Also, you can run the Scene Texture Counter script which will give you an idea how much VRAM and how many textureslots your scene will require.

A GTX 260 is quite old, and I /think/ the 1.02 version (the latest and greatest) of the Poser plugin will only run on 500 and 600 series cards. I /think/ the next release (1.10) of the plugin will be backwardly compatible with pre-500 series cards, but I need to check. TBH, the vast majority of plugin users are on 500 and 600 series cards, and given their current price-point I'd recommend upgrading your card first to get the most out of the plugin.

Oh, and for Poser, the 600 series cards are the go, since the 500 series cards only have 64 RGB color texture slots, and Poser will use those up quickly on a large scene.

[EDIT: So the 650/650Ti and 660/660Ti are the lowest end cards worth looking at, or if you are after more performance, 670, 680's are the go.]

Well, at least I have a reason. I suspected as much. So I have to decide on whether I can do without elaborate setups when I do animations. It's still the best I've seen for that. Thank you for your time and advice.

Also, I try to import .obj files into Octane...all I get is a blank screen...even though it shows that the mesh has been imported.

Octane Standalone? If yes, then click the mesh node to kick off the render. The statistics on the bottom left of the render should tell you is it's actually rendering. Bottom right of the render has any potential error. If you are on 1.02, then it may not work with 200 series cards. Release 1.00 worked on those cards (and is the version the Poser demo uses).

Hardware is going to come down to how far you think you'll go with GPU rendering. If you think there is a possibility you'll end up with multiple video cards, make sure you get a m/board that will handle that (multiple threads about this in these forums). I think in general most brands of 660 will be similar in quality/capability. Get at least 2Gig VRAM - more if it's economically available.
