I wonder why noone here posted about the new Nvidia Titan already, based on GK110. Or at least I totally missed the thread. ;)

Lots of rumors going out like 300Watts power needs and also 6GB RAM with near the power of one GTX690. Sounds like a dream card for Octane even with the 900 USD price-tag. If this all is true I think I will get at least two of them and replace my two 580GTX. Maybe even four...don't know yet..

Some (unconfirmed) specs from a german site:

Code: Select all

    nVidia GeForce Titan

nVidia GK110-Chip, 7,1 Mrd. Transistoren in 28nm auf ca. 550mm² Chipfläche
    DirectX 11 Kepler-Architektur
    maximale Hardware: 2880 Shader-Einheiten, 240 TMUs, 48 ROPs, 384 Bit DDR Speicherinterface
derzeit vermutete Hardware: 2688 Shader-Einheiten, 224 TMUs, 48 ROPs, 384 Bit DDR Speicherinterface
    (angebliche) Speicherbestückung: 6 GB GDDR5
    nVidia-eigene Performance-Schätzung: 85% des Niveaus der GeForce GTX 690
    (vermutliche) TDP: Richtung 300 Watt
    (angebliche) Preislage: 899 Dollar
    Launchtermin: Mitte/Ende Februar

i don't want to sound too negative, but i doubt this thing will boost octane - at least right away - by what the numbers might lead to think. warp scheduling is still the same as with the gk 104, and smx was only increased for double precision calculation, which - apparently - should give a multiple of the throughput of the gk 104 design. only octane doesn't use double precision, instead half single precision.

saying so, i think the advanced design of the gk 110 will result in notable better performance compared to the gk 104, but not by great margins more compared to the fermi chips (again: for octane with it's current engine code).

taking a quick look on the changes in the general kepler instruction set and execution strategy, this goal might require some serious overhaul of the engine. just a recompile wouldn't do. on the other hand doing so would enhance gk 104 performance and gk 110 even more, since octane could then take advantage of hyper-q and dynamic parallelism, which is new to the gk 110.

important note: personal opinion from a non-cuda-dev & might therefore be completely wrong ;)

ps: and i'd love somebody to prove me wrong, since i'd want to replace my 580s by something notably better too :D

As far as I understood the rumors this new titan card might be the non-functional Tesla chip output.
What I don't understand is that gaming cards don't have double-precision at all. Only the pro boards.
And this is a nice gaming card with the specs.

Really interesting how this will proceed. Good thing in germany we can order cards and sent back in 14 days without reason.
So I may order two, give them a speed run and sent back if the difference isn't that high.

I don't think we will see great gaming card improvements this year at all. AMD offers cheaper cards with highest performance at the moment and has no hurry to release a new card with the "prformance crown" they have.
Nvidia 680GTX is doing great for games too and games for PC are not even using all teh power of a 680 / 690.

But if this Titan card uses all the "broken" dies from Tesla production with lots of RAM then I will give it a try.

Core optimisations to current/next-gen cards in Octane will be welcomed of course hehe.

hum, Hope someone could test soon the power of Titan for octane !!
If we consider 1568 cuda for 680GTX and 2688 cuda for Titan, same Kepler design, we will have 1.7 ratio.
Taken the benchmark result for 680 : 3.38, we could expect a low score of 5.75, lower than and 590GTX at 350€, but 6GB is realy a dream !

I'm not good at math, so you mean a 590GTX is not much slower as the Titan from just the numbers?

I read that the Titan is based on semi dud Tesla k20 ie 13 out of 14 units operable so if my maths is right I would expect it to be about 25% faster than a GTX580. Power is said to be 235w. Soon we will know. Today is release day apparently.

So the GTX 680 is 70% of the speed of the GTX Titan.
And we know that the GTX 680 is 70% of the speed of a GTX 580 in Octane.

Conclusion, the new titan will perform like a gtx580 =P.
