Hello all!

Because i would like to commit my resources ( time, money, collaboration, third pary projects ) for the foreseeable future with these of the Octane render, i have 4 questions:

1. For me, now, the Octane render seem very "clean" ( easy to use, interactive, "managable", "easy to play with", intuitional ). I had a very little experiance with the Indigo render and it seemed slow and somewhat unintuitional to use.
Thus, do you have plans to keep the Octane render easy to use for new users, answer regulary questions in the forums, and bring detail tutorials for the new features you introduce in the render?

I ask that, because i see projects ( Zbrush, for example ) that have troubles to at least inform their users what is going on with the project, and were at the start very frequently met at their forum, but in recent times they are nowhere to be "seen" ( it is exaggeration, but still... )!

2. How do you plan to arrange your future upgrade plans? Upgrades at no, half, quorter price of the full product?

3. I am interested to a lesser degree, what other formats for animation, other than RenderMan RIB, do you plan to support? I ask that, because in the near future i plan to use animations in my projects, and it would be good to sync these plans with yours.

4. What are your plans for integration of the Octane render in Blender or Sketchup ( my modelers of choice :) )? Do you plan to publish documentation how 3rd party could do this?

I hope the answers of these questions will be helpful for others!

And keep up with the good work!!!

PS: As i have read my questions, i realized that it would be good to have some roadmap for the Octan render, because that would lead to less questions of that sort.

Hi,

replies:

1. sure, i've made 2 render engine communities before, and 1 complete project (lux) and i'm planning to go all the way. we've also got 2 employees in refractive software LTD that will focus on tight user support and developing extensive documentation and tutorials.

2. that's undecided but we'll probably go for a cheaper 1.0 to 2.0 upgrade license.

3. currently implemented is OBJ+MTL, and the beta's will feature RIB import. after those we'll decide to add more based upon the status of the project when we're there and our userbase/most used 3d applications. maybe collada .dae could follow as this will enable the free version of sketchup to export to octane. (i dont' think the free version can export to obj)

4. as said on the 'plugins' question post in this forum, please read it.

You have to bear with us as octane is very young, in development, unfinished and we've got our hands full starting up a new project/renderer/website community in a short timeperiod, while trying to deliver a full featured renderer that can compete with other renderers that have matured for already 4-5 years. That's a very hard thing to do, and we're doing the best we can.

You are right. At the moment, the only posibility to export geometry from the free SketchUp 7.1 is through the .dae file format!

My bad. I've read it in the meantime.

I understand you! And mind you, i am new user who is happy with what you have in the moment, because i would like to grow with Octane in the field of rendering!

Thus i asked for API and guidance for 3rd party developers for the integration with external applications. That would create movement towards Octane on its own, enlarge the user base by itself ( people will come, because Octane is integrated in "their" application ), simplify your communication with the users ( because they will tend to communicate with the developers of "their" plug-in, not with you ) and all other synergetic effects that will lead to win-win situation for all sides.

Perhaps you know that, but ... i am not sure!

And again, keep up with the good work, all sides deserve it!

Good night to all!
