I cannot see why there is so little information available for the demo downloader when it comes to finding an exporter etc. It seems that you can only get an exporter when you buy and register. This seems rather obtuse to me. If you are mentioning the rendering of sketchup models and you do NOT intend the free version to be use, it might be a good idea to mention sketchup PRO rather than just sketchup which is not concise enough.
A good idea to utilise the graphics card but very poor utilisation and spreading of information, if we cannot see the complete forum as logged on demo users, we will miss information which may have led to a purchase. When you snub potential users you snub your own bottom line.
I have seen some really fantastic renders here but cannot get past the communication issues you appear to have, feel free to delete my account on this forum as without improvement of the issues mentioned I am unlikely to even be able to use the demo so shall not trouble my bank balance for a license.
Have a great end of year/christmas folks.
Mike Amos

I don't really see what your gripe is.
More than 4500 customers have made their purchase decision on the basis of what they can try and what they have seen and heard and yes it is true even the non-integrated exporters have only been available to those who have paid for Octane. In part this was to counteract piracy and also a part or bonus of the purchase deal.
Since Otoy have taken over running Octane many aspects of the business have improved and unlicensed customers have been granted access to more of the forums. It used to be very limited indeed and was relentlessly spammed since anyone could post. Also prior to the release of v1 demo there also was a fair lag between the demo version available and what beta testers were using so there is more actually more useful and up to date info now for potential customers to assess. The manual is much better than it used to be as well.
If you have specific questions to ask about using Octane with Sketchup feel free to ask away.
Either an Otoy employee or a passing forum visitor will be happy to help you.
An early Merry Xmas to you too.

If your application exports to .obj/.mtl then Octane can render it. Of course you need a specific exporter from your 3D app, if you want to pass other command line options to Octane, which .obj format doesn't support. There are people who use Sketchup with Octane, afaik, so they will be able to fill you in on the exact situation for this particular software.

I know this will sound like a retort but my ten pnce worth is this;-
I have no intention of buying something because someone else (even 4500 of them) did so. I need to know it will work for me with my chosen application.
This render program has been touted as sketchup fit, it turns out that this supposition has at least one caveat. There has been no reply to suitability for use in sketchup rather than sketchup pro, which has certain additional export routines. There are apparently different render scripts which include one for skectchup but, if I cannot access them for trial use, where is the incentive? For a company to make potential customers jump through hoops is an elementary mistake of gargantuan proportions and while you guys are using the item, possibly without trial/demo use, why would you expect others to do the same. The advice when looking into a render program (any render program) is to try often and buy once, when you find one that suits you. OTOY seem to have the 'buy the program and see if you like it' approach. I repeat, the only way for many folk to try the program is to buy it, due to the methodolgy of the dev team in programming and market introduction. Add that to the difficulty of getting real info and it is an inane minefield. Like I said before, if an administrator is reading this, you may as well delete the account because I cannot see me being able to try this program, buying it is less likely than gordon brown being asked to be president of the UK.

So do you want answers to specific questions or are you going to keep posting stuff that ends by asking the mods to delete it?
So you want to know -
Does Octane work with Sketchup free?
Will it still work in the future with new versions of Sketchup and Octane?
Is there a fully functional and up to date/maintained exporter script for it?
Can you try the script out with your demo trial?
As I have tried to point out, prior to Otoy taking over, the business side of Octane became something of a mess.
In fact for a while there it looked like Octane as a startup would go under but thankfully it hasn't.
Things have* improved steadily but I grant you the presentation does still lack the detail/finesse you might expect from say a large corporation like Autodesk. I take your point that this information is not visible in the shop window and it puts you off your purchase as does not being able to verify it all works for yourself.
I am sure the Otoy guys want to do the best they can and having seen this thread will endeavour to do something to remedy the deficiency. For the most part their focus has been on coding rather than marketing. In the beta phase your typical Octane customer has been an adventurous sort living on the edge of development and making do with basic/primative conditions. Now that v1 has arrived people will expect more/better/different.
The good news is that there are a lot of seasoned users who are willing to assist others even if they sometimes make it challenging to do do. If you choose not to believe their answers or assurances that's up to you.
Hopefully someone who is a Sketchup user will be able to answer the questions I have framed up for you.
If those questions don't cover all you wish to know please add to them.

With the demo you can judge for yourself if Octane is worth buying, unregardless your future workflow.
I just fell in love with Octane trying the demo and I made my workflow to go for it.
I had a 'but' in the beginning with my Archicad 3dmodeller getting to Octane properly.
I like opportunities better then 'buts' and obstacles are to overcome and I just went for it.
Octane works with sketchup free. I use the exporter and I am in fact a Archicad and Artlantis user but I work with Sketchup as an inbetween to export for Octane. That is my current workflow.
For a frequently Sketchup user , which I am not, it surely work... If I can hit the button, you can
The renders made by Sketchup users is living proof of the exporter working fine.
If you have any particular questions about Sketchup and Octane...
Me (as OR beginner) and sure the pro's will be able to answer them.

I have to agree with Mike1158. I also think that is not always so easy to understand if Octane can be suitable for personal needs.
This is mainly because there is no export option (from Cinema 4d in my case) and no chance to save Octane project.
Understanding a possible working workflow for animation (changing materials, upgrading and editing the models or the animation of the scene) can be quite tricky.
A trial version of Octane with available exporters would help a lot.
Just my experience.
Have a nice day.

Well I guess its up to the Otoy guys to take notice of the difficulties prospective customers apparently face and make life easier for them.
Strange how it hasn't seemed to be a problem before. It appears after beta testers come tire kickers and door slammers...but hey that's ok.

to Mike 1158 and any others reading this:
to use the Octane demo with Sketchup free, do the following:
1) Install Sketchup Free
2) Install the Sketchup .Obj exporter plug in from Tig.This can be found at http://sketchucation.com
You'll need to register on that site in order to download the script.
3) Drop the downloaded script into the plugin's folder in sketchup free
4) install the demo of Octane
5) Create some geometry in Sketchup, add materials and then export as an .obj file using the above plugin.
6) Open Octane demo and load in the obj file.
7) if you need a bigger resolution in Octane demo then render out part of the mesh at the max demo resolution in the octane demo, then move the camera in octane using the lens shift function.Stitch the resulting set of images together in Photoshop or something similar.
If you need other mesh conversion facilities , consider downloading Meshlab at http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/
hope this all helps in testing Octane
