I am disappointed with the price hike but not enough to abstain from buying. My main concern is with how updates will be handled. If I find out there will be a zillion updates and I have to pay for every one if I want to stay current.... I can't. I don't poo gold, unfortunately. If the update system is like Pixologic's, I would DEFINITELY buy. Heck, I'd buy the plugin for Maya too! Pixo's system is: pay once, get free updates for life. I like that system.... a lot.

So to sum up: I can afford Octane and I might buy it but my decision will hinge on how updates are handled. I couldn't find anything about it in the FAQ. Anyone have any answers on this?

Thanks.

Now that Octane is out of beta I imagine people will pay for each release version ie v1, v2, v3... and that any updates to the major release like v1.1, 1.2 will be free.
Most likely to update from the previous version to the next will cost less than buying new. Typical business model. ;) Free for life sounds a little optimistic. Ideally you should have bought in during the beta period.
I would guess it might be cheaper for you to wait until v2 comes out rather than spend £199 and then a short while later upgrade. Not sure.. Best of luck with your purchase decision.

I realize Pixo's model is too much to hope for, sadly. What I'm hoping will happen is pretty much what you said though I need an official answer before I can decide. I love OctaneRender; it's everything I want in a render engine- fast, high quality renders, and the UI/set up is fairly intuitive for the most part. I just hope I can afford it and afford to stay current with it.

Hi Bobbiethejean,

A 1.0 license will entitle you to all 1.x updates.

Thanks

Well as long as I don't have to pay the full price to upgrade to v2 than I'll be fairly happy about it. And of course if you guys don't go through a version within a single year. Maybe every other year. Not made out of money I'm afraid. Also I would be much more enticed if blender was supported stilllllll. Just saying. I like the standalone so I won't ask for my money back but I'm sure plenty of blender users who bought this renderer ahead of time feel ripped off. I sure do. Please don't give up on it and please find a dev. PS: More texure/Uv mapping options would be very nice to have before V2. Multi Uv would be quite amazing to have. Maybe in 1.5/1.8? I don't think I can afford to pay for an upgrade for awhile...

Agreed. If they release a new major upgrade every few years and upgrades cost less than the original price, I will be happy. Well, I'm never really happy to part with money but I can live with that. And OctaneRender is SO VERY MUCH worth it.
