Any official updates on e status of this? We are interested in buying some licenses, and I am 1,000% tired of mental ray. It has screwed me way too many times, and it is so hard to get a photorealistic result. I am waiting for this with MUCH anticipation. Please give me some idea of the time frame for release, please... I beg you.... No, seriously, I mean it.
A little info what im working on.
Have convert the 4 Octane materials that they can show the material in the Softimage shaded view.
Only as simple lambert and phong, but i think that should be enough.
It´s also possible to render the Octane materials with MentalRay
Will show a video soon...

Here are the finished shaders in work with MentalRay.
It seems that there is an error with the opacity on a reloaded scene so that the opacity isn´t working in the viewport.
But this shouldn´t be a big issue i think...

I (literally) cannot wait for this.
I wish I could wait, but I start a project that would really benefit from Octane.
I really hope that it is released soon!

The next i´m working on, is a seperate tool which should convert instances in real geometry.
I use a seperate tool because it´s simpler to test something.
When it´s done, it becomes a place in the OctaneRender for Softimage to use the same thing automaticly...

There is a large market of Softimage users who are VERY frustrated with mental ray.
I am one of them, and we complain about it all the time. Every time we hit the render button.
Sure it (mental ray) is a fast raytracer for reflections and (usually) for refractions, but it is very slow for indirect lighting solutions, and final gather is
a poor replacement. There are also many knobs to fiddle with, and it is a constant balancing act
not only between speed and quality, but also accuracy. When you tweak some settings, it throws others totally off.
It is like trying to drive a Ferrari with a bunch of other cars stacked on top. The underlying Ferrari is still good, but
it can't be used to its fullest potential because of having to work about all the other cars stacked on top of it and trying to
prevent them from falling off.
Octane doesn't seem to have this problem, and that is a large part of why I am hoping this is released sooner rather than later.
The quality and speed are excellent, but it doesn't require constant tweaking to get a good result. It works like the real world, with
advantages the real world doesn't have (and neither does mental ray).
Please keep us updated on your progress as much as you can.
I am waiting with a fist full of money to purchase.
Thank you,
Perry
