Does it mean that obj import would be abandoned ?

I hope that importing in obj would remain available, because I am working on very long project that may last one more year and changing the format in the middle could mean redoing many things from scratch.

I also hope that the new format will be available in export from Blender !

to have Alembic file format, to support OpenSubD and to have Octane supported PTex would be dreams come true, more over when all the libraries come with liberal license that allowed to the libraries to be included in closed proprietary software. It definitely much better than FBX. However, at least there should be one format that can import animation (as outlined in the initial features promised when Octane was launched 3 years ago). At the very least, if FBX is not possible, then point cache/motion data format can be supported as the lowest common denominator.

Damned I spoke too fast in a previous post : the numerical value error is still here : When I type -10.94 (X or else) in the translation field of the Transform node, and reopen it later, the value displayed is -10.9399996. Not visible in this large scale scene, but it is not normal. :roll:

OBJ support will very likely stay, because there is no need to abandon it. And there seems to be someone already working on an Alembic exporter for Blender (http://ramencomp.blogspot.co.nz/2011/10 ... rk-in.html). I'm not sure how compatible the New BSD License is with the Blender GPL license, but I would expect to see Aelembic support in Blender sooner or later.

Anyway, for now all this scene format/Alembic stuff is very very preliminary.

Marcus

stupid question but is there an option to disabe the envoriment-lightning if i only want use mesh-emitter?
should it not give a speedboost without env-light??

note that if i have a closed room with an mesh emitter, i can see less noise when i change from daylight to texture envoriment!

Texture environment doesn't slow down render. Only daylight environment does, because it require extra ray tracing for the sun.

OP states:
* GPU's with compute model 1.2 and 1.3 (like the GTX 260 and GTX 280) run faster.

For me, this is the slowest Octane so far:

PT
2.57 = 0.71 Ms/Sec
2.58e = 0.56 Ms/Sec
2.59 = 0.43 Ms/Sec
3.01 = 0.31 Ms/sec
3.03 = 0.29 Ms/sec
RC1 = 0.27 Ms/sec

PMC is also broken and renders black (which I see is a known bug)

I don't know if this is a problem or not. I was rendering away with Octane and after some time I tried to open the preferences window. The window didn't open and none of the buttons or menus would respond. The render continued as usual, just no response from the interface. I eventually had to quit and restart. The problem is that I have not been able to reproduce it, so I don't know what caused it. Just thought I would let everyone know in case it comes up again.
