Saw this in art history class today and thought of Octane :) Specifically when the Octane developers allude to the image being produced via these "shadow rays" that emanate from the camera.

The quote, in case my highlighting makes it hard to read:
Indeed among the ancients there was considerable dispute as to whether [visual] rays emerge from the surface or from the eye.

Wow cool find. Well, it's a bit different with those "shadow rays", but it's quite interesting when you realize that in the past it wasn't clear if visual rays go from or to the eye.

Thanks for that. Which book is it?

HA Yes ! the light history ... is really interresting ! if i rememeber well this is Alhazen ( a very important scientist from the first millenium ) who realized that the light rays come from the object not from the eyes.

the understanding of the light, is really a great scientific and philosophical adventure that show the human evolution in term of nature understanding.

nice topic :D

now we are using light to slow down atoms ! hahahaha ... what huge step !

this sounds like the same theory like when the sun rotated around earth - humans are very egotistical :) - everything is rotating around us - the first problem to most people still
- well there is another philosophy that people created the universe with (or in) their minds, and everywhere you look it exist just because you look at it (in that case all of the obsolete theories would be correct)

- did you get to the part where it explains that light behaves like a wave and a particle depending on situations or medium, this was discovered with quantum physics :), anyway studying is fun when you can relate it to something in real life, it's all connected somewhere

Hey acc24ex !

this sounds like the same theory like when the sun rotated around earth : yes i think you're right, in some way "geocentrism" is the same process.
i won't say that "human are very egotitiscal" in the bad meaning, but in this context of discovering what's around us, i would prefer to say that the world perceptions are "relative" to the persons who receive these informations. finaly , it seem normal to be the zero point in a space without references. and it 's easier to admit to everyone that we are the center because this is what we see.
And imo, the genius is to rebuild what is taken for an obvious thing.

did you get to the part where it explains that light behaves like a wave and a particle depending on situations or medium

yes , In the quantum world, everything is mathematical and cannot be really understood by everyday experiences.
the behaviour to be waves and particles is really hard to understand an it apply to every quantum objects as interactions, lights, and matters (photon, electrons, neutrons etc ... ), we just have to accept this as a new class of behaviour that show the beauty of our world.

there is another philosophy that people created the universe with (or in) their minds, and everywhere you look it exist just because you look at

i get this ! , and i thinks this is a delirium the same as the geocentrism that you spoke before.
we know, in the experiment, the result of the measurement is depending of what we looking for ... if we 're looking for waves we obtain waves behaviour, if we looking for particules we have particules behaviour. that's why we can think that we are defining the reality, because all options are already there, and we make it real by measuring and /or perceiving.
for what i know when an object become particle or a waves is called the wave function collapse. and this collapsing appear when the context is "noisy" or "hot" when there is a minimum amount of energy that interact with the particle (the same effect of the measurement) and we don't have to be present or perceiving for the waves.
functions is collapsing.
imo, what i want to say is that the matter we are seeing every day is already existing even if we don't look at. because the everyday world is not a single particles, but a huge amount of complex interactions that satibilise all objects in one new stable and predictible behaviour.

sorry for my poor english :)
