My videocard at home overheated and killed itself. An 8600 geforce fx i thinkit was

Can anyone recommend a card to get? I saw a few 570s for under $300
Or would i be futureproofed with 1000+core kepler?
Thanks!

Hi YuuJin, better support for the kepler is still underway and future-proofing only goes as long as the kepler stays on top. Point is, nvidia will always come up with better (and more expensive) cards even when you're already done spending. If you badly need a card NOW to use Octane with, then as of August 2012 Octane still works best with either the 3GB gtx580 or the dual-gpu 3GB gtx590. This doesn't mean the 570 is a bad card, in fact, the 1.2GB gtx570 would be a practical choice if you're on a budget (and while waiting a few months for the hype of the keplers to settle down or become more stable).
Please note, the above can be said only for gpu-rendering with Octane and a kepler can still be considered for what other purposes you have.

The 470 is a very solid card, I use it at home. It has 1.2 gigs of VRAM I think, the 580 can get 3 if its VRAM you need, but the 580 will cost you double the 470 but wont give you double the speed.

Here is a forum that shows various GTX cards and the results in speed and performance.

wow thanks for the info guys! didn't realize a 470 would outdo a 560

I'm still just using octane for fun, so I think I'll wait it out and save up for a new comp with all the bells and whistles

my Machine right now only has 500watts so there's the bottleneck I don't really feel like upgrading
so for now I think I'll stick with this 560

as a few minutes on google seem to show I need to buy a new power supply just to get a higher end videocard.

and those 470s seem to also need a new power supply

Investing in a good power supply is a good idea.
and you would def need a better one if you get a better card.
a single 470 needs a 700 watt PSU I think, but 2 would only require 1k watts (pretty sure) (those extra watts are taken up by the rest of the machine, the 470 itself takes around 350).

Either way, a 500 watt PSU is too small for most video cards that are used efficiently with Octane.

Don´t let you fool! A 500 watt PSU is NOT too small for most video cards...

At http://www.bequiet.com. - Helpdesk - PSU Calculator
you can enter exactely all devices of your machine to find out, what PSU you need.

in most cases you will be surprised how little you REALLY need.......

A 500 Watt PSU is totally O.K. for one GTX 570 or 560.

so, i did the test!

Rendering with iray, that takes all CPU und GPU resources
on
Intel i7 970 CPU
2x GTX 580 3GB
1x GT 430 1GB

used at any point not more than 563 Watt

Rendering with octane
on
2x GTX 580
used 487 Watt max.

Therefore a 500W PSU is far enough for a GTX 560 or 570 ! :-)
