First I just wanted to say this is a great plugin...really. So much faster than iray to navigate and translate.. Currently however I'm using iray because of two things :

Firstly, the hair and fur shader has an option to convert to geometry at render time in 3dsmax, this currently works with iray. It takes a while (and space on the GPU) to translate the hair to geometry for each frame, but the images look great. Any chance of getting this to work in octane too? It should work as it's real geometry and not a fake render effect

Secondly iray has a new 'matte' material which lets you render the shadows only of on selected objects - this is a must for compositing cg elements into any live action plates. Are you working on anything similar?

Small thing, but can we have animatable parameters in the camera window? I tried to keyframe the focal length to do a focus pull animation, but it would not record the keyframes.

At the moment for the project Im working on I have to use iray unfortunately because of hair/fur, motion blur and also comping onto live plates with the matte material - but octane is so much easier and faster to use! I'm sure when Octane is finished it will be able to do all this stuff, it really is a great plugin and I love that you have different kernels to choose from if you're pushed for time.

Finally does anyone know where I can download a material database for 3ds max octane materials? I think the live DB is great, but would be a lot nicer to have these in a single file on the computer.

cheers and keep up the good work. (sorry for all the questions)

For those that don't know, I found that although the 'imager' settings in the render window are not animatable, you can create an octane camera instead of a standard one. In in the modify panel you have access to the same imager settings. These overide the ones in the render window and unlike those you can set keyframes for these settings (including focus pulls).

Probably a better solution if you have multiple cameras in one scene.
