I'm an idiot. Thank you for all of your patient replies. I was just complaining to make myself feel better I suppose. Frustrated. This is amazing technology. I should (and do) feel more fortunate that the team included this in the first place.

Actually, I'm an idiot. I wasn't looking at the real render settings. I was looking at the C4D Octane globals, not the settings from the Octane Menu.

Can't see chrome beneath plastic lens

I have a car whose headlight assembly is covered by a plastic lens. The lens is a solid object which has thickness and the chrome beneath is also made up from primitives and is therefore "solid"

I have a specular material on the plastic lens and a glossy material for the chrome.
