They (iirc Roeland) have mentioned something about not being possible to use their closed SDK in Blender. It's in some thread somewhere. This thread (and others too) is full of questions, when, how, if... so there is plenty of opportunity to come out clear and loud.

Because of all this reluctance and lack of clear feedback, I'm just assuming it's not planned at all. It's less disappointing this way, than hoping it will suddenly happen. :)

integration could appear, if not for a cycle

This is just an excuse. And a very bad one.

Cycles is just a competing product, like Vray RT, Arion, etc... This shouldn't stop Otoy in trying to get a piece of the Blender market pie, like they are doing with 3DSMax, Maya... (where the competition is even stronger)

If Otoy produces an integrated plugin, then Blender users will use Octane, but if they do nothing, then Blender users will start to favor integrated Cycels over non-integrated Octane standalone. So the question is: does Otoy want our money or not? :)

Probably yes or no it's not so difficult, at least a learned that way :)

Blender communities is quite big, so there would be enough money in it - to release a tighter integrated plugin for blender.

If not with the first stable release of octane :), at least a roadmap or so.

Clarity is just great, and saves time.

If there would be multi-threaded export and voxelization, in the near future... Fine with me!

It's a great piece of software, and I like to use in the production.
It saved my neck a lot of time - thanks to octane and of course the hard work of the dev team - I was able to deliver quality work to my clients!

I for one have been ignoring cycles up until now because I am used to using Octane. The more cycles progresses the more I am having to question this decision. An integrated Octane would certainly put my mind firmly back onto staying where I am. It is starting to get to the stage where all the goodies going into cycles means that I have to start considering it and there is no point keeping both render engines.

As everyone is saying. A little bit more official feedback would be nice. I am sure there must be some way of getting around the blender - octane integration problem. There have been companies that have taken blender, made minor changes to it and then sold it as a standalone package. Maybe Otoy could do something similar. I'm certainly no expert but maybe that will get around the licensing issue.

I would buy Octane blender integration. The legal "problem" is just a lazy excuse in my opinion. Where there a will there is a way.

No this would be a bad idea. Blender gets updated quite a bit and for every update they would have to update their version. Also I would prefer not paying for a 3d modeller that works exactly like blender when blender is around.

- I think they could do it, and until there is some official news about it I presume they are not.

Which begs the question: If they are not going to do it why do they have a blender icon on their main website still? It's a bit of false advertising in my opinion. - Hopefully someone from otoy can say something about this. The only reason I bought this program (other than the fact it's pretty and fast) is the fact it's advertised to have blender integration. An exporter should not really count since their Maya/3dsMax plugin is integrated. So why would I presume that the blender one isn't? I bought this program expecting Blender integration within the near future (Like within a year or 2) which I don't think is that bad of an expectation to have (I mean they have a working 3ds/Maya plugin already). If they end up cancelling this integration they should remove their blender icon or at least say "Blender is not integrated but uses a exporter" on the buying page.

So otoy, please explain yourself now whether or not you still have a realistic plan that you can integrate Octane with Blender without me having to buy another modeller that is a modified Blender (Which can't be sold as blender anyways). If you've cancelled this integration please remove the blender Icon.

Tricking blender users into buying your product is kinda illegal. Just saaaaaaaaying.

Actually, we're very interested in seeing a plug-in for Blender happen. There is nothing we're doing to hold that effort back.

There are two things needed to make this a practical reality:

1) Developer interested in working on this project
2) A way to do this cleanly given the Blender's licence

The latter issue makes the plug-in different from any of the others. It is probably not insurmountable in the end, but it does mean that Blender has to be handled differently than the other plug-ins. This process is not as straightforward as everyone would like it to be from a development perspective, and that is the main reason it hasn't been in the initial wave of plug-ins.

That sounds promising.
Is there anyone on the forums with the legal knowledge to understand what we can and can't do with Blender or how to circumvent any licencing issues?

Maybe you need to be speaking to the people at the Blender Foundation. They are the people who are in the best place to know what is and isn't possible.
