There will always be a difference between those who are making a living out of their renders and the many who are either starting out in this field, use the technology as a limited part of the development of a wider project or who are termed "hobbyists" and enjoy creating 3D but not for commercial gain.

I was attracted to OTOY because they offered a DAZ plugin and my initial impression of their remit was to cater for a whole range of 3D artists from the exclusively commercial to those of us who are delving into this field and experimenting with different mediums.

While I don't object to purchasing an upgrade it depends on how much it costs. If the focus for OTOY is shifting away from people like me towards the big players with entirely commercial objectives then I will definitely be priced out of the game. Seeing as my initial impression of OTOY was establishing an affordable GPU renderer for a wide community of 3D artists it would be unfortunate if those of us who have invested in it early on and contributed its development can no longer afford to do so. A subscription model is not the answer.

OTOY's student license was a very welcome step in the direction of cultivating new users and encouraging them to become ongoing paying customers. I hope they don't negate this strategy with high upgrade costs in the future.

:D Hair and Fur, region Render.
I am very excited with 1.5 already, but this is awesome!!
It is fulfilling all the user's expectations.
Can't thank enough.
Please add camera consistency for Alembic imported cameras support.
It is already good , but Matchmoved cameras sometimes have no targets, are free cameras,
have lens, focal discrepancy etc..
It is already good , only asking to improve further on the next releases.

I am most interested in the after effects plugin and how it will function... Looking forward to hearing the detail.

There is no actual need to upgrade to V2.0 if you do not need the extra features advertised. For what I use Octane for , I'm quite happy with the V1.5 features. If my work required it,then I would upgrade to V2.0, but at this moment , it does not.

So the decision is really based on if you are prepared to spend for the upgrade based on your personal requirements,or stick with V1.5 ( hereinafter referred to as Octane lite).

I bought Octane standalone and the Maya plugin very early on because I like what they were doing even though it was still bleeding edge. I thought 99 euros for standalone was a steal. I decided to move to Maya so I bought the plugin for 99 euros as well before the price went up to 199. Either way I still think its a bargain when you compare it to some of the other commercial renders that are for sale. It's still maturing, but it's come a long way. 1.5 is quite good, but it's not flashy in that it doesn't have all the wiz bang features so many of us want. Much of what 1.5 is now was laying a strong foundation for future releases. It wouldn't surprise me that they had concurant development happening. I'm not a 3D professional it's just a hobby for me. My real occupation is a mechanical engineer. Hobbyies are expensive ;-).

Unfortunately the lighting solutions in the OR DS plugin, even when the v1.5 version is released, will still not be capable of what it's possible to achieve in DS so simply on the basis of being able to use skydomes that many DS environments incorporate I'll need to upgrade to v2. I'm willing to buy the upgrade as long as I can afford it but it's frustrating that this is necessary to render what I consider to be a fundamental component of DS scenes.

the only thing missing for me..is really a more diverse render elements.. and even this..with octane's speed in rendering is not THAT important..

i have 4 licenses (std alone + max plugin)...i wouldnt mind upgrading at 100 euros each..really..

LOVE ALL THE FEATURES V2 has to offer all of them i will use.
