Most of the features of Octane are compatible between those two versions. 2.52 can load most scenes made with 2.57, but it can't load the new nodes introduced in later releases, like the medium nodes and the deep_channel_kernel node.
If your scene contains these nodes inside the node pins of other nodes (so they are only visible in the node inspector), they will be ignored by 2.52.
If those nodes appear as separate nodes in the node graph editor (including inside one of the macro nodes), 2.52 will fail to load the scene. If you want to edit the scene in 2.52 you will need to delete these nodes yourself.
Other than that, the two versions use different systems for defining absorption inside specular materials (2.52 uses extra inputs on the specular node, while 2.57 uses separate nodes), which are not compatible with each other.

Do you have any update for the instances supporting version of Octane and Octane 3ds max plugin? I mean do you have a rough timeline for this to come out? Even as a test reliase.
Thank you very much
Michael.
Im interested in this information too. I have to decide if I start the next project with Octane in 2-3 weeks and use instances or go with maxwell for next project. I would like to use octane but need to decide.

@mbetke : Well, we are waiting for so long for instances and camera animation features, that I would advice you to use the available tools at the moment you need them.
I have put in standby my snowy landscape two months ago, as Instances and animation plugin were expected soon, but nothing happened yet, and I will finish my winter scene in summer if we have some luck...
And an animation plugin for Blender doesn't seem to be for soon...

Yes I could wait if its not a commercial project. Its a bit hard to make a good financial proposition to the client since I have to charge more if I need more time with some tools.
So with Maxwell I need to use a Renderfarm or tell teh client he will get a real-time movie with the advantage of presenting his project as a live-presentation.
As soon as Instances - and hopefully proxies with it - are out it will change a lot for me because I can offer animations the fast way and the good thing octane supports .dds makes it even less complicated to use the scenes in real-time too.

In future is there a anyway you could support splines with the up and coming instances.
It would be great to use FiberMesh as instances from ZBrush.
There is a developer making plugins for Max and Maya to convert the fibermesh into splines.

Instances would be good for grass, trees or crowds, where you can have 5 or more different geometries which you can mix.
For hair you need a little bit more, you must know the hair bending, so that you can select the right one from a pool of geometries.
You can read the generated splines and calculate the bending between the first, middle and last point. You will also become the orientation.
With this it should be possible to mix hair from a geometry pool.
But this is nothing to make in 10minutes
The best option is that Octane can render splines...
