I have mixed feelings about this. All I need in 1.5 is basically displacement .... fur is a nice extra I might need one day, region rendering si cool .. but only useful to me, if this somehow makes it into the blender plugin. Subsurfacing and round edges - I'm not sure how this is useful for people, who do not use standalone? I'm only a hobbyist, who uses this for some fun .. so money is an issue and I'm disappointed that I have to pay for displacement .. this is such a basic feature.
So not sure what to think of this, if the upgrade costs a lot.

Hi Riggles. Welcome to Octane! I see you have been here a little over a month. Hope you're loving it as much as those of us who have been using it a year or two and built our entire workflows around it.riggles wrote:Ok, I'm happy about the additions and all, but the excitement seems a little much. I mean "shut up and take my money" and people crapping their pants? Uh, we're supposed to be getting features that competing packages already have, like displacement — features that have been holding Octane back from being a production renderer for many.
So, I'm very glad I can use Octane for things I haven't been able to so far and I look forward to doing so, but they didn't just release magic. Just trying to keep things in perspective. Guess I'm the old guy saying "Keep calm and carry on."

Just throwing it out there; to all the people who Octane doesn't yet represent a production renderer. The 'Benchmark' Production renderer with features and roadmap you compare everything else to: how much does it cost?

I see what you did there. Don't be fooled by that date into thinking I only discovered Octane a month ago, or that I haven't been following it's progress since before OTOY. But I understand no one likes a new guy coming in and appearing to rain on the parade of those who've been there longer, I do. I didn't mean to give offense, and I accept your welcome with sincerity.FrankPooleFloating wrote:Hi Riggles. Welcome to Octane! I see you have been here a little over a month. I'm hoping to love Octane and I likely will. I've been interested in it for quite a while. But I try not to have any illusions about it's limitations and what else is out there, even in the GPU-only world. If I didn't think Octane was promising, I wouldn't have bought it. I've been waiting for these things, too. But to get as excited as some seem to be getting escapes me. That's all.

Exactly this. I have a bundle of green ready the minute it comes out.FrankPooleFloating wrote:With what 2.0 brings, I'm ready, right now, to slap down a greasy wad of cash the first moment I can. Hell, I'd chew through a brick wall to get to all these features.
Now if only pixologic steps up to the plate and release Zbrush 5 then it would a magical year.

Each computer needs a standalone and a plugin license so a 50% upgrade fee for two computers running the DAZ plugin is 279 Euros. Not exactly chump change for a recently graduated student and hobbyist like myself. Especially after spending 558 Euros to run the plugin on two PC's less than a year ago. The results are great but the plugin has certain limitations that are very difficult to work with (eg lighting) So I agree with those who are taking a more circumspect approach to this news. If the upgrade fee is reasonable (ie a lot less than 50%) then I'll revise my opinion otherwise I am starting to view the pace of development as a potential money pit for 3D artists in my position.

Octane 1.5 was over a year in development... how did you get all the 'heavy' features of 2.0 out so fast? Or is it all lip-service so you can hype people up at the NVIDIA conference?
I also am a little disappointed there will be an upgrade fee, considering this is only 2.0 of the product, and many of the features of the 2.0 version (specifically displacement support and area render) are things that should have been present in the render engine since the beginning. I feel that the 1.0 release was more like an open-beta that people paid for, rather than a fully featured render engine. And I really hope we don't have to pay for a plugin upgrade fee, too (for those of us not using the standalone). That would be a swift kick in the junk.
No offense meant, as I absolutely love Octane and will support you guys to the end. I just wish you had taken a page out of Pixologic's book and offered these updates for free until the software is at that pro-level state. Zbrush is on version 4.0 and updates are still free.
Just sayin'...
By that line of thought mentalray, vray, Turtle, Renderman, etc were never completed because they still don't have a stable realtime path tracer nor as fast as Octane.riggles wrote:Ok, I'm happy about the additions and all, but the excitement seems a little much. I too wish I could pay only once in a lifetime of updates for everything I buy. From taxes to rent. But the price would have to be so high to the products be economically viable that I would have to pay by installments anyway. So you see, it is reasonable to have an upgrade fee. Lots of business are even changing to a subscription model and it still makes sense.
