I still haven't figured out how to properly put backgrounds in. I suppose part of the issue is that the environment set ups are secret node graphs to configure. Anyways, a friend took a picture of the moon, and I tossed in an Eagle.

To be fair about OcDS although its still in beta it does still work. I have not noticed any glitches though admitting I have not been doing anything adventurous.
To my mind Iray has made Octane and OcDS redundant.
The performance and characteristics of the 2 programs is very similar but Iray already has good support and it will get better with the much larger user base of a free program.
So for me Octane was a relatively expensive dead end but it gave me experience of an unbiased renderer which I used much more than Reality/Luxrender.
The hardware needed for Octane will serve well for Iray.
May still use Octane a bit more to do comparison renders.

No. You need more expensive hardware for iRay. As I said before, I can't afford to use iRay. It would cost me a lot of money or I'd have to get used to really slow CPU rendering.

Perhaps it's time to call out the higher-ups publicly? If no one at OTOY is even going to demonstrate caring, why not?
CEO Jules Urbach can be found on twitter at @JulesUrbach.
Co-Founder and CTO Malcom Taylor is @Malcolm3141.
Co-founder Alissa Grainger appears to not be on twitter, but here is an article she wrote for Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alissa-gr ... 19516.html
Perhaps we can make ourselves known the comments section?
Advisory Board:
Eric Schmidt @ericschmidt
Ari Emanuel @AriEmanuel
Brandon Eich @BrendanEich
George Gilder @mediarules2014 (maybe not?)
If I were on the advisory board, I'd want to know about this debacle, and then I'd want to remove myself from the board. At best, this is unprofessional. Pretty sure it's crossed the line of unethical, too.
Example tweets:
To CEO and CTO: "when are you guys going to release a finished OcDS plugin?" or "is anyone at OTOY going to help get the OcDS plugin released?"
To Advisory board: "Hey, @___________, why are you on the advisory board for a company @OTOY that hasn't delivered on promises to customers in over two years?" Or, "Did you know OTOY accepted money over a year ago for a product it still hasn't delivered?"
Anybody?

According to your signature you have 2 980GTX - iray will happily use them, difference in speed of rendering is ~10% so you have to buy additional say 770GT to compensate (there were 4Gb models AFAIR). I'm currently going to buy 970GTX to my second box to increase net rendering speed and that will cost less for iray than for Octane where I have to buy not only hardware but additional licenses as well.

don't know myself! It's been something like three months since the last statement from the dev,
Absolutely no updates? I personally think there may be an issue iray. DAZ.
Maybe a legal issue in the background who knows?
Karba was a dev for the 3-D studio Max plug-in until recently?
JimStar looks like he's taken over his role (and is now pushing weekly updates) 3DS MAX
T3 has not been heard again for three months.
Personally I would complain! About the issue (and lack of updates)
That's the only way this issue is going to be addressed,
Otherwise I can see this plug-in not ever coming to light

On my systems iRAY seems about 10% slower, if that. I have two different computers and both seem to manage iRAY well. On the older system I regularly had problems rendering animation with OcDS 1.2 but this doesn't seem to happen with iRAY. So even if iRAY is 10% slower (not sure that it always is) it makes up for it with stability on my older system. Even upgrading one card in my system would close the speed gap and I'd be able to sell on the old card to get some money back. I've paid $$$ for OcDS so I want to see it finished and for it to be better than iRAY but that doesn't mean that iRAY isn't a very good free alternative. If OTOY wants to compete with it then OcDS's price needs to drop to at least the level of Reality otherwise I doubt it will attract interest any longer. That's a hard pill to swallow especially as OcDS was supposed to be a relatively cheap unbiased rendering option when it was first released as a beta. But that window of opportunity has closed unfortunately. Exaggerating the short falls of iRAY isn't going to change that fact.

I was unaware that iRay allowed out of card textures like Octane does.asennov wrote:Could you clarify this for me?Hydra wrote:No. You need more expensive hardware for iRay. I'm running >4 GB renders on my 980s. All the time now in fact. (Not that quicky render a few posts back... that was peanuts.)

For me to redo my last few renders on iRay, I'd have to sell my video cards, and get one Titan X. It would be slower too.

That's a very specific situation you are in, which doesn't quite justify your blanket statement of iray needing more expensive hardware. But I understand how annoying it is.
For me, as a hobbyist, it's more the thought of abandoning all the stuff I've learned and developed so far and starting over. So a huge expense in time, which is critical for me in my current situation.
But if I was new to this, and had to choose in the current situation? After looking at these boards for 10 seconds I'd go with Iray. I can understand why Otoy isn't allocating resources to this, it's a REALLY hard sell

Out of core textures haven't been implemented in iRAY yet afaik. Only OcDS 2.1 has that feature but it's unable to render animation like iRAY can. It also can't use CPU and GPU like iRAY can. The 980Ti with 8GB VRAM has just been released so it's not necessary to buy a Titan. Even when using OcDS 2.1 it's always nice to have more VRAM.Hydra wrote:I was unaware that iRay allowed out of card textures like Octane does.asennov wrote:Could you clarify this for me?Hydra wrote:No. You need more expensive hardware for iRay.
