Is there any workaround for this? I set up an animation using absorption and now I wanna render it :)
Thanks for the report. Unfortunately there is no workaround, but we will release a beta 2.51 in a couple of hours that will fix this and 2 other issues (incl. the slider).

Is it normal that PMC takes twice the time to reach certain samples as pathtracing?

Yes, it's. But those are sometimes "much better" samples than in path tracing ;) It really depends on the scene.
