Thanks for the scene. Yes, I think that there is a bug with your guides object and the plugin renders broken geometry with it. Today is a holiday here is Spain, but tomorrow I will check your scene in the office to try to fix the problem as soon as possible.
As you say, render the guides as two vertex polygons hair can be a workaround, but I will try to fix the problem to don't need this workaround.
