Has anyone tried rendering animation with OcDS 1.2 and DS 4.8? That's my main concern about upgrading from DS 4.7. Is it possible to install 4.8 at the same time as 4.7 or is this not advisable?

I haven't tried rendering animation with OcDS 1.2 in DS 4.8, but I do have 4.8 and 4.7 installed, both on different hard drives. Try changing the install path in DIM. Although in DIM, it's listed as 4.8 Public Build +Beta+. I'm pretty sure it's the current release since it was listed in my update section in DIM, but I could be wrong. I wish they would just give us a .exe file...

Although, I'm not sure what the difference between 4.7 and 4.8 is, besides more stable IRay.

You can manually download the .exe through your product library.

Thanks for the reminder...embarrassed that I didn't look there before.

Can someone confirm that curret Daz release is 4.8.0.55?

Installed OcDS 1.2 into DS 4.8 - animation did not work. Attempted single aniblock on G2F - viewport did not update.

Ok, thanks for trying. That's a great shame. I was hoping that 1.2 might work for animation as well as stills.

Concerning iRAY, is there a way to compare animation rendering speed with OcDS in 4.7? I normally render OcDS 1.2 animation in HD (1920x1080) at 500 maxsamples. I wonder if there's an equivalent setting in iRAY to compare it with OcDS. If the rendering speed and quality is about the same then I might install 4.8 and leave OcDS to one side until it's updated.

I have a GTX TITAN X and I have been tested, Octane Render for DAZ Studio is much, much, much faster than Iray, unfortunately still not working (OCDS) for Animation in DAZ Studio. And the picture quality is better in OCDS. I do not know why they say than Iray uses CUDA cores, it seems that is not, in my opinion. It is very, very, very, very slow.

No problem. There is a max sample setting in Iray, but it doesn't equate to OcDS. Like, 5000 iray samples would be way longer than 5000 OcDS samples. You can, however, set a max render time. I'd suggest setting that to however long it takes you to render a frame at 1980x1080/500 samples in OcDS and then comparing time and quality.

I just did a quick render in iray - over 80 seconds before geometry showed up. 2 HD figures at subd 2 and an interior (2.7 million polygons), but still, in OcDS it's less than 2-3 seconds.

I strongly agree here. As much I've come to loathe OTOY and no matter how bad the taste in my mouth, OcDS 1.2 is far, far superior to iray.

I'm here for speed too, but from my experience it's not that easy :)

I've began to convert my current project to iray since RC2 came out. So far results are:
  • yes, iray takes longer to prepare the shot to render, but main delay happens only once before the first frame of animation, there are no delays between frames due to preprocessing, only due to encoding and writing images to disk
  • yes, iray 'iteration' is longer than one spp of Octane but generally you'll need less iterations to achieve the same quality of image
  • I was able to 'revive' some shots that was dropped by me due to inability to render them in Octane (well, maybe I'm just dumb :) ) in reasonable amount of time, in iray I can render them in ~5 minutes per frame, long but at least doable
  • iray uses the pattern of ray distribution that is consistent from frame to frame, so even if there is still some noisy areas in your frames they are not blink as in Octane (PMC sampler is especially awful) and may be combated either with built in noise filter or better in postprocess
  • you can employ additional optimizations in some types of indoor scenes and scenes with heavy caustics (generally I avoid too much caustics in my scenes, so not tested these features extensively)
  • even without caustic sampler enabled iray is more accurate on scenes with multiple refractive surfaces, especially when surfaces have bump channel
  • you can limit the length of path traced by iray so emulating 'direct lighting' and 'diffuse' samplers of Octane, with comparable increase of rendering speed
  • iray doesn't overheat GPU, for Octane I had to take special precautions to avoid that (even if OcDS has temperature control method by itself)
  • difference in speed is scene-dependent, iray seems more sensible to polygon count, in scenes with many trees and grass Octane can be 30% faster, for most of my scenes the difference is ~10%
I have intentionally not mentioned differences in integration, comparing only rendering engines. After the conversion I'm able to push the project forward faster, thou the rendering component of workflow takes a bit longer. Now I'm considering buying 970GTX into my second box to overcome this.

Didn't try to render anything with OcDS 1.2 in 4.8, just checked that is works and immediately disabled it in plugin manager because it tried to insert it's dreaded 'Octane render settings' node in new empty scene.
