Maybe use a mix material with SSS?

Hi coilbook,
I tried to make a very fast and light snow material to use with AO (your case).
If you want a faster material, you can also use a single material of these, or add displacement for very close shots.

Sorry to jump back 5 years :D but could you possibly put this max file you made for snow as a max 2014 version?
Or is there a snow material kicking around somewhere? Couldn't see it in the Live DB
