:!: Trying to make grass using displacement, starting from a 2048x2048 contrasted noise pattern made in Photoshop, I discovered that at pixel level the displacement is made of stacks of pixels !

So many faces created explains why the displacement slows down so much the render speed !
I noticed the stack of mini planes as well, when trying out displacement with a landscape.

One experiment I tried was to displace a plane with a simple airbrushed line then applied a gloss finish, no roughness. I wanted to see whether it was possible to get nice 'liquid' reflections using displacement. The outcome was the surface looked as though it had no smoothing applied, lots of poly facets. Is this user error or the way displacement works? No smoothing?

@Gristle : As all these micro faces are separated from each other, I think that smoothing is not possible... Smoothing requires to take in account the angle between faces on a common edge.

Yes, it appears that way. So no subtle water ripples with super slick reflections I guess.

Not sure : as it works at texture pixel level, if you have a high resolution texture, and the resolution of the Displacement set to equivalent values, it should look smooth with a glossy shader. However, as there are stacks of layers, I doubt that the result would be good with transparent/specular materials.

We have to test these situations ! ;)

In v1.55 and v2.0 obj import and default greyscale image for opacity map is ok, but in 2.01 I have to reload as RGB image. Have all three versions installed and checked with all of them.
This will be fixed with the next release.
Hello there, if I open projects from 2.0 and 1.55 in the new 2.01 all the greyscale images are not loaded. I cant reload them because some of the materials are from LiveDB so I don't know where are the textures.

Where are stored the textures from a material downloaded from LiveDB?

Well I think this is the same problem that was reported. All goes well in the older versions.

Cheers

Well, I would say this is a scale problem, I think that your model is way too big.
Modeling system : I7 32GB Windows 10 & Fujitsu Celsius H720
GPU : 1x Gigabyte GTX580 3GB + 1x MSI GTX780 3GB + 1x PALIT GTX780 6GB +1x Asus Stix GTX1070 8GB

Just adjust ray epsilon value in render kernel.
