Well I can only hope that the years of development on CUDA has helped the state of the Metal release – but I doubt it will be in any way bug-free on day one, despite the beta testing. The one thing going for Octane X is that I assume they don't have to worry so much about the almost infinite array of potential use cases with PCs (CPU brands, motherboards, RAM, GPUs etc etc). Apple machines are relatively standard (at the moment). So fingers crossed!
I just wish I could get my hands on the damn thing to see for myself...

I mean it HAS to be better than the current Mac version, which is hands-down the must unreliable software I have ever used, and I've been using 3D packages since Infini-D and Strata Studio were a thing. Mac Octane is just an absolute mess. Otoy need to completely over-deliver and make Octane X a serious option for production rendering, or they will get completely steamrollered by Redshift who are taking a much more cautious and hype-free approach to their Metal release. With all of the teaser posts and hype Octane X needs to be something seriously special.
