God, OTOY is like a stripper that keeps taking clothes off only to reveal ever tinier garments underneath. The week has passed and really we're still none the wiser!

Just release the thing on an open beta! What gets me is Octane is one of the most crash prone bits of software I've ever used, and there are bound to be just as many bugs in Octane X as there have been in the CUDA version. The quicker we ALL get to play with it, the quicker we can get logging those inevitable bugs.

I was hoping that in the intervening three years since I stopped using it, Octane might have, I dunno, matured a bit and become stable and useable? If Octane X is just as bad as Octane on Mac used to be, this will be the biggest letdown after the longest wait.

It is a bit better lately, but compared to other third party renderers I've used, it's the most flaky. The good news I read somewhere is that Otoy have said that their major focus for the next release will be on stability. Not crashing c4d along with the Octane plug-in would be a major breakthrough.

The crashes i've had were always related to stopping a in progress render

I would swap some speed and/or functionality for stability any day of the week.

Am I correct in thinking the Metal version has been re-written from the ground up? I would hope that this version is a lot more stable than the previous Mac releases, I eventually gave up and let my subscription expire because of the horrific instability and amount of time I spent troubleshooting. I expect the Metal version to be fast as hell and rock solid stable, production ready from day one after this massive delay.

Totally agree, I doubt otoy would risk damaging their reputation at this pivotal moment.
