I am confused - what is the difference between Octane 4 and Octane 2018 ?
For us using the Houdini plugin, which version am I supposed to use?
Thanks

Octane 4 is the last numbered version
2018 should be version 5
there is a 2019.1 now, and the differences are a lot, new features, new core, typical of newer versions.
and a 2019.2 in experimental form, again with new features that previous versions don't have.
check the forum, in their corresponding threads there is a lot of information about these versions written.

Please let us first adopters (enterprise without all access) have access to some basic features like "Scatter depth limiting " for improved fog or spectron.
It should not be an "all access only" implementation as it is a real downside of V4 which pushes us towards redshift.

V4 is now a few versions old; it is feature-locked. What may seem like "basic features" to you are often subtle and complex problems, deeply embedded in the broader core functionality. It's very rarely like sticking another Lego piece on top.Martange wrote:Please let us first adopters (enterprise without all access) have access to some basic features like "Scatter depth limiting " for improved fog or spectron.

I can sympathize with your desire, since we are still using V4 for production work in our shop, but the reality of software development is that at some point you have to move on to a fresh set of code. If you want those new features, you're going to have to move to the newer code base.

Three new options are coming out shortly now that 2019.1 is stable which should be helpful to longtime users:
- Monthly enterprise subs (with discounts for perpetual V4 users)
- Perpetual 2019 sales and upgrades from V4
- Monthly ent rentals for net slaves (€10 month)

How much does an upgrade from v4 to 2019 (perp) cost?Goldorak wrote:Three new options are coming out shortly now that 2019.1 is stable which should be helpful to longtime users:

It will be free if you bought V4 new with Ent. AA. Otherwise, if V3 was your last paid perpetual upgrade then €350-500, depending on whether you also bought Ent AA in the last year. We may tweak the numbers a bit with discounts and promotions, but it will be in this general range.
That's really good news Jules, thanks for that info.Goldorak wrote:It will be free if you bought V4 new with Ent. AA. Is there any ETA on this , when this should start ? I bough AA in November 2018 but never used it on any of my licenses so i'm still using v4 since i was "afraid" i'll go back once my AA expires so i didn't want to switch my projects to octane 2018.x.
Thank you very much for listening community and giving us more options than just subscription/rent.
