I'm fully expecting it to be slower than the version based on CUDA, which is a very mature API, plus Nvidia cards which have RTX hardware elements. But as long as it's faster than using my 24-core CPU (and C4D's painfully slow renderer), I'll be happy.

I think they may deviate from their own direction. In recent news, they talked about iPhones, iPads and other iOS devices running OctaneX. I don’t think many people care about performance on iOS devices.
I estimate that the actual performance of OctaneX on the release date may lag significantly behind the Windows platform. Of course, the premise is that they want to release it. This may require a long wait.

It'll definitely be slower, we already know that Octane X on the Radeon Pro Vega II is a bit faster than 1 x 2080ti. Which sounds promising until you compare the cost: $5000 vs $1200. We will take a battering from the CUDA club!
As far as I understand it though, you could have say a Radeon VII in a 5.1 cheesegrater running Octane X, and have a basic PC with a 2080ti connected and use both cards to render.

I'd have to think that two of the w5700x (16gb) mpx cards would be great for LV performance, and then using Render Token from there would be a compelling setup. Those cards are even competitively priced!
I'm really interested to see if Otoy can pull off some interesting HDR implementation with macOS and the XDR display. That'd be a game changer as windows doesn't do nearly as well a job of handling HDR content. Coming from the world of photo and film I'd really appreciate the greater depth in the image even if most consumers can't even see it yet.

RC3 is looking good and release date has been set. Working now on a lengthy forum post which we will post in a few days, hopefully with all questions on this thread about Octane X finally answered
