Yes I thought the same. You beat me to it.

As most I.O.R.'s are between 1 & 2 Link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_refractive_indices

Being able to select only integers for the index would pose a problem.

Ok, I've got a few questions for that:

Do you only use the GTX 580 or do you have any other graphics cards?
Which version are you comparing with?
Do you do the comparison using the same scene using the same settings and resolution?
What is the CPU of Octane usage while rendering?
Are only other applications affected that use the graphics card (like Maya) or are there applications like an editor or the web browser that slow down, too?

Cheers,
Marcus
Hi Marcus,

i have find out when it's slowing down, it's when I use pathtracing only, with pmc and direclighting works everything just fine.
Now to your questions:
- I only have one GTX580
- the same problem I have with 2.49b (I have used probably the other settings, pmc)
- I use portal light in my scene (70000 tris)
- CPU is not used at all
- all running appls are affected (fiefox, maya, etc...)
Best regards,
Dalibor

Sorry again for the glitch. It will be fixed on Monday. It's just one line... As a workaround, connect a float2 node to the index pin and choose the IOR in the X value.

Cheers,
Marcus

Ok, thanks for the info. Could you please test the same scene and resolution in beta 2.46b. I would be surprised, if there is much of a difference, but am curious if for some reason the UI behaves better.

In general, if you render on the same graphics card, that is used for display, the UI feels "sluggish", because during each kernel call, the framebuffer will not be updated. I.e. even though the UI drawing happens, you can't see it. Since beta 2.48b we try now to use smaller work chunks in path tracing and direct lighting, which should improve things a bit, but the general problem is still there and is hard to solve without affecting the performance.

If you really want to work in parallel to rendering, get a cheap display card (any that supports OpenGL 2.1 can be used) and use the GTX headless for Octane rendering only.

Cheers,
Marcus

Marcus - I have a strange problem with octane 2,50 to.
GTX580, Quadro FX4500, Core I7 920, win7 64.

When I'm openig octane scene for first time everything is ok, but if I try to open other scene after some time everything going crazy. Computer start to works, like Pentium 133, or something like that. CPU load at very low level, everything stoping, hard drives usage is very extreeme.
Same hapens, when I try to exit octane.

Sorry about my english

Regards Marcin

certain hdri's slow my system down to a crawl, .19 Msamples/s. And when I change out the hdri I go back up to normal, (which is between 2.5 and 7.5 Msamples/s).

Also finding that there is some sort of hesitation in the right click menu in the node interface when I mouse over an expandable option. Like its opening and closing so fast that I can't see it several times before I finally expands.
CPU - i7-950 3.06 Ghz, 24GB Ram, Win7 x64, 2 display monitors, GeForce GTX 580 3GB Classified. I'm glad to say I LOVE OCTANE!
