Some things I noticed:
1. Moving the toolbar does not get saved. So you have to do it everytime you restart Octane.

2. Changing a surfaces to a floatimages, floattexture, image og whatever in the node inspector, will set the power of it to 0.9 which is very annoying. Any chance to have it default to 1.0 (max power)?

3. I know Radiance has improved reflectance models where light gets lost in reflections at grazing angles, but is it possible to improve that even further? I still get these black rings around objects when I want a shiny surface but no or very little reflections.

4. Octane doesn't read the MTL file settings correctly. If I wan't a surfaces roughness at 0.1, it's not possible to do so, as Octane limits this to only 0.025 (I talked to Abstrax about this).
To 1: The layout is saved with the scene file, while the toolbar icon layout is not. -> The toolbar icon layout is automatically stored in your preferences, while the pane layout/toolbar placement can be stored with the default scene settings and will be applied to each new scene.

To 2: This shouldn't have changed compared to beta 2.44. Or did it?

To 3: We will polish these things in future releases.

To 4: We haven't had time yet, to change these things. Sorry about that.

Cheers,
Marcus

About default 0.9 values -> these are actually realistic,
in real life, reflectance is always maximum .8 to .9

It also helps reduce noise and fireflies, other unbiased engines do this internally/silently after parsing material data,
we don't do it silently in the engine, we just use defaults.

Nope, just an annoying factor since day one ;)

Oh, didn't know that. So when we import OBJ files, the texture power value should be corrected to 0.8 or 0.9 before loading it? Sounds strange to me, but if that's the way to go then fine by me.

I agree on reflectance, but for alpha this is nonstandard.

BTW, great release, congratulations, I enjoy especially the improved interface very much...

Why do the material names not pop up on the main object node when doing a mouse over? I was so happy when you added that, now it's gone. Why take away something that's crucial to hooking up surface nodes? Is it possible to have a checkbox option have the material names visible on the node at all times?

---and I'm starting to realize, from the way you guys are talking that fireflies are just an unavoidable problem with unbiased renderers. It would be nice to have a definitive list of tips to avoid them, maybe stickied in one of the forum sections. The fireflies are a huge problem. Still.

I got to leave office and go home so here are my 2 small bugs I found (DIDN'T Have much time to test about it)

1) on node : add -> materials -> pick something and then press the button that resets the cam (next to the rewind button) see what happened?
2) now go to the mesh preview environment and set float power to 0.0010 (minimum) where the heck is the light shown coming from?

PS. AWSOME release! To say that you just improved the UI is a major understatement. You made HUGE difference. Thank you Refractive team !!!

Hey good one!
I was specting so much to have the sky/enviroment's north offset fixed, but, it is not!
Here it is a test.
Do the following to reproduce the bug:
-Open the ocs attached. You should see a top view of a plain containing one teapot and one sphere.
-Change the environment to daylight. The settings are the default, month 1 day 1 hour 14.00 and so on.
-Change the north offset, wonder about seeing it perfectly spining around (the good behaviour)
-Change the hour, let's say 9.00
-Try the north offset again, light is not spinning adecuately, and if you go again to 14.oo in the hour parameter, it gets completely nuts and show random illumination.
Another one:
-Maybe I am wrong but I thought the terminator effect was mended.(See the image attached)
