I've installed the openGL extension wrangler and it is now working.

Thanks for the clues :)

Ok, I've reinstalled the nvidia driver and NOW everything seems to be working. My warming to ubuntu is slow. It still feels very alien and a LOT of work compared to windows. I am always open to a challenge though so I will see how I get on.

Fine, and only in a few hours.
Because me never get warm with ubuntu i prefer opensuse with kde as window manager.
But this is my personal opinion.
The ubuntu community is bigger and you get help everywhere even in a render engine forum, hehe.

Cheers mib

I even installed those PPAs that Lionel mentioned. I didn't get anything from the blender PPA, is there something I need to do in order to start it off? The firefox PPA worked so I must be pretty close.

I've not had a chance to benchmark anything yet. My initial gut feeling is that Linux might be a bit more responsive when manipulating large grids and this was the problem that I had in windows. My object had about 1M verts and it was a pig to manipulate in edit mode.

The blender ppa should give you daily builds of blender. However, we're now at RC2 and close to final, so it's not that important you get those updates as you may want to stick to 2.57. (and I'll probably do the same). I'll check the best way to get only stable updates.

You have to activate it in user preverences > addons.
Nonsense, have search for 15 minutes. :x

LOL! Thank you, mib2berlin.

I would never think to look for it there myself, because this functionality is IMO not some optional 'addon', but something that is used regularly.
