I tried IRAY with Daz studio for a bit and I can say the Octane plugin has so much more to offer than what we have with Iray right now. I'm not saying Iray is bad, I think it's fantastic! But honestly I prefer Octane material setup, and I really do like the OCDS integration (wish it was more refined bug wise obviously).

I am reluctant to want to switch to IRAY at the moment because I really hate the Daz material system. I also am not a fan of shadermixer/builder whatever.

But I do plan to do some more testing with IRAY for Daz and keep my eyes on it.

I have to agree in this case.
A big advantage I (currently) see with OctaneRender is that I can change stuff on the fly while it is still rendering.
From what I was able to draw from my quick test-session was that this is not (yet?) possible with iRay in DS.

Material picking options also make so much more sense in Octane, and I like the material-setup-approach OctaneRender has a lot more than what DAZ3D did with their current iRay materials.
Bombarding new users with endless options and configuration dials isn't very user-friendly in my opinion, and always tends to alienate users, instead of making them embrace the technology.

Again: This is just based on a 1-hr.-test session, and iRay in DS just launched.

there is an interactive rendering option for Iray, however I am not at my real computer to test it. It says interacive, but maybe not so much LOL. Can't say till i get to try it.

I tried this on my pc that doesn't have Nvidia in it, and even with everything set to interactive mode it is not interactive, but that may be because its running on a modest CPU with no Cuda power.

I'm not keen on spending more money on shaders for iRAY when I already own OR BUT if we don't get a stable OR plugin soon I will ditch it asap. I'm utterly sick that we've waited years to get a stable release of this plugin and DAZ roll out their unbiased renderer in months.

There appears to be a post in this thread from an OTOY representative claiming that OTOY will continue to "distinguish" itself from other brands at some up coming conference so when it suits them they can promote OTOY but when it comes to the concerns of us long term and loyal customers we're left hanging.

Really that kind of chutzpah takes the biscuit! :x

Well keep in mind Otoy doesn't work on the Daz Plugin and that has always been a challenge for us. We keep saying Otoy this and that (particularly in the Prerelase 5 thread) but we know its really t_3. I seriously doubt Otoy cares about the DS market so when they say they will distinguish themselves its for their core markets.

I think Octane is great stuff and has been able to carve a market for themselves and I don't really see that changing. Only thing that is worrysome is for those of us who still find Daz our primary tool...

OTOY are responsible for the development of the plugin so I think that they should prioritise current customers not potential ones in the future.

OTOY is not responsible for 3rd party plugings. The Daz plugin is 3rd party. Its like faulting Sony for a game EA made. I didn't know this when I bought the plugin, and for a bit it really didn't matter but it all became very clear when I had to do the upgrade to 2.0 and the spelled out 1st party plugins vs 3rd party plugins.

Yeah, a big difference is the huge library of user materials in Octane. There's almost always something to get one started on a material.

When i first started I used that material library a lot to learn. But I never use it anymore because I can make materials pretty quickly and I like making things different for each render. Octane's material solution is powerful, but also allows you to make simple materials if you want to. I like the fact I haven't been tempted to purchase any shader solutions since I got Octane.

Just tested also the iray DS. A very good point. And I think that there wil be a plenty of third party material for it very soon on the store. The IRAY DAZ force is that's free (but need an NVIDIA card). And animation works ...
But I continue to use OcDs as I spent much money... and keep an eye on DAZ 4.8 progress
