No, you don`t
Start from cd and choose install or start live cd and push install then.
The installer leads you through the installation process.

I have it download as I type. Just don't tell work. I'm not sure of they would like me using their high speed internet connect for such things.
I'd like to know more about the OS than simply having it installed. From what I've read it looks really good. I think Funky Ferret was the last version that I played with.
I'm sure I'll pick it up with the help of you guys.

Just a quick tip: disable all desktop effects and compositing if you want to avoid trouble with blender (Ubuntu install may have some light effects enabled by default). And run away from Unity
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you my PC now running Ubuntu. Wonderful, it worked first time. The dual boot works a treat and my Windows7 is still alive (which is good because I didn't back it up).
Right, what the heck do I do now

I recommend you add a few ppas for getting latest versions of some software:
Blender: ppa:cheleb/blender-svn
Firefox: ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
plus some other you can easily google for: google, adobe flash, shutter, medibuntu, getdeb, dropbox, wine, etc... Most of them are in official depots but you'll get the latest with customs ppas.
NVidia proprietary drivers and cuda should be installed manually (you can get the first automated but you better stay in control of these two babies)
Open terminal > cd to download folder > type "sudo sh cudatoolkit_3.2.16_linux_64_ubuntu10.04.run"
You could use the "Tab" key to autocomplete file and folder names.
Download octane for linux (cudatoolkit 3.2) and unzip with right klick in file manager > go to extracted folder > click octane
I don't know anything about ubuntu and my first impressions are that I might not be learning much. Unless things start getting a bit easier soon then I am going back to good old windows.
I have downloaded octane but every time I run to run it, I get absolutely nothing. It is completely dead. I have managed to download and install blender and that runs fine. What could it be with Octane?
I have actually managed to install the nvidia driver and the cuda toolkit (quite proud of myself for doing that).
