A few guys here have 7 Titans on one machine.

I think the issue is Otoy's endeavour to create a two-tier network render offering - something like a 'regular user' and 'professional' version. The current network limit is 12 GPU's. This is very disappointing to me since Standalone can handle 7 (arguably 8 under Win 8.1) GPU's already. A 50% increase for Octane's network rendering capability is hardly an effort to use the potential a network setup offers. Otoy probably have to balance the demand for cloud rendering when that becomes mainstream. And the 'professional' version would probably offer access to more GPU's. But the term 'professional' too often seems to be license to charge big and lock out small studios. I am keen to see the structure and pricing what they come up with.

I think WE HAVE TO PAY otoy, because if we pay otoy, otoy could spend in research and development... but at the same time, we have to maximize our productivity.

Agree. We have to pay otoy. But we also need to get atleast some render nodes free.
2 free rendernodes with 6 gpu is fair imho for both sides.

hi,
i like the idea of one slave per standalone but the 12 gpu limit is not good, 16 would be more fair.
what about if the 12/16 gpu limit is valid only for slaves without taking in count the master's gpus?

I assume since there's a 12 limit gpu on standalone its already hardcoded for now.
So with 2 free render nodes we get 12 gpu for them and 12 for the standalone total of 24 gpu limit. I think that's enough for the current price of octane. Comparable to vray and arnold.

sorry, i forgot to add that there must be an option for buying extra slaves nodes at a fraction of price of the standalone.

Whatever option I would make it free to use a render node, but just make it so that that node can ONLY be sued as a render node, rather than as another licence to use Octane separately.

I have two machines on my network right now that I could use, but neither had great GPUs so it's not work the cost of 2 more licenses. But I'd be using them already if it was free

Exactly - as a hobbyist, i can't afford several licenses - and my machines have under medium GPU's - but i have a couple or three of them :-)

I don't like any of the options posted. Why limit the GPU's in the nodes? Very disappointing after waiting so long.

Only lightwave and modo offer free unlimited rendernodes at the moment for commercial renderers. At one time modo limited it to less than 50 afaik under the Foundry but people complained and they went back to free unlimited nodes.

Question regarding license. I only have one octane standalone and lw plugin license but I have two lightwave license. If I upgrade octane 2.0 now I get standalone for a discount and get lw plugin free.
If I buy another license for my other lightwave license, I assume I pay full price for the second license, right? Does it come with free lw plugin license, too?
These licenses are not tied directly to any of the two lightwave license/dongle, right?

Reason being the network rendering license issue seems like its going to take loooong to sort out for otoy. So if I get a second standalone license for network rendering I'm wondering if the lw plugin will be free for that second license as well. Like a consolation prize.
