I don't know if anyone else noticed, or I missed something, but as far as I am concerned, in current version of octane render light doesn't get through specular materials, no matter what the settings.

I have been trying to achieve light dispersion, using a prism, and after trying to tweak the settings for some time, I realised light simply doesn't get through.. Light only gets through using fake shadows option, and that doesn't create separation of wavelenghts..

So if you could please do something about it...

Here's a sample screenshot I took from a scene someone from OTOY's team posted as a guide for light dispersion:

//EDIT: The scene comes from here: http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=8027

Hi Jani,

Make sure you use PMC for something like this.
Keep the caustic blur low (0.0010) and try reducing the parallelism.
If you don't care about caustics from lots of bounces (like in this case we only want to see the main line of light dispersed) then reducing the max depth helps a lot as well (speeds up render significantly)

Just note that these kind of renders (dispersed caustics) can take some time to become clean. The above was done with 1.20 in 15min on 2x580's but the dispersion was clearly visible well before then.

Hope that helps...

Chris.

Thank you Chris, I have managed to achieve the effect :). I just took a bit more tweaking :P

I used 1.20 with a background image (1024x768) and tried to place my object (which is very simple geometry) and after a while my pc freezed!I tryed to reboot but it was not possible..I restored my pc through SAFE MODE  I did it TWO times and the same thing happened....no problem with 1.00 although I can not use the background image , which is agreat feature btw.my driver on both cards is 314.22.Do you know what causes the problem,is there a solution?
the same thing with 1.12......waiting for a reply.is it the drivers?is it octane? Can this be caused due overheating?

I have been playing around with Roeland's prism scene using Octane 1.20 and it has crashed on me twice so far. The first time I thought it may have been because my cards were overheating. I have two GTX460s, one with 768 MBytes of memory and the other with 2 GBytes. The 2GB card's temp was hovering around 92 to 93C after the first crash. I didn't run Octane from a shell so I didn't see any error message, Octane just suddenly went away. Right before it crashed the samples per pixel were around 12000.

I then restarted Octane from a shell just to be sure and made the smaller card inactive. This brought the temp of the 2GB card down to around 88C while rendering. I restarted the scene and left it running. I went away to do some other things when the samples per pixels were around 38000 (I had set the max to 64000). When I came back Octane had crashed again with the following error message:

Code: Select all

jason@gemong OctaneRender_1_20_linux$ ./octane
ERROR: Program executed illegal instruction.. terminating
Segmentation fault
It looks like Octane went out of bounds on a memory call and the OS shut it down. I'm running Fedora 18 with Nvidia driver version 304.88. If you need any other information, let me know. Thanks,

jason

Yes, i would keep an eye on the temperature. Also power supply, make sure your power supply has enough wattage for your system. Octane features like background image should never cause your entire pc to freeze, this sounds more like hardware problems. There are windows gadgets out there that can monitor your GPU's temperature. You may also want to calculate your system power usage (roughly) from the parts you have - would will need to browse the web to find power usage. NVIDIA list the graphic cards power usage on their website, others may do the same.

Thanks
Chris.

Just a little heads up: We uploaded a small update that fixes two problems (see opening post of this thread). The fixed issues are fairly uncommon.

If you download the installer/archives from the download section of the accounts page, the installer/archives will have version "1_20a". The Octane window title will still say "1.20".

Cheers,
Marcus

There is a problem with stop button. I can't restart render on the same node until I render another material/geometry node.
