I have decided to extend the competition for one additional month,
And to remove the theme, although the entries about the endof the world / 2012 myth will get more leverage when judging
The main reason for the extenstion is that i am pn honeymoon with my new wife (see offtopic forum in a few minutes for some pics of the wedding) and its a bit tough to organize the jury remotely from my honeymoon site.
We also spend a lot of money on the prizes and we need more entries to justify the spending of the huge cost of the prizes... Sorry to those who have worked hard to reach the deadline, consider it like this: you can spend some extra time to fine tune your entry and have a bigger chance to win.
I have updated the first post in this topic with the information and rules about the competition.
Hi Radiance
First of all congrats for your new married life!
Then I have to ask if we are going to be able of using instances for this competition. I bet some of us are going to take advantage of this feature for our images.
Thanx

The modern skyscraper epitomizes human pride and power yet it is just as vulnerable to the ravages of nature as anything else. I was inspired by this classic poem by Shelley:
Ozymandias
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away".
Info: 1,868,680 polygons, about 12 hours to render at 2520x3210
The scene was created with 3dsmax and ZBrush. The textures on the hero skyscraper were hand painted in ZBrush while everything else was photo based. The background buildings were based on models and textures from Google Maps.
Post work consisted of curves, color washes, color balancing, distortion, chromatic aberration, vignetting, and combining different render layers (main scene and separate cloud scene).
Unfortunately I don't have any interesting materials to add to the database because everything interesting was done with textures.
Sad to see that there are so few entries. Now that the deadline has been extended again I may make another entry.
720688 polys rendered in 40mn directlighting at 300s/p on a gtx 460 2Gb (only 371Mb used) rendered in RC 2.57 No post production except for signature, only hotpixel filter set to 0 because i want to keep this huge sized render in a short amount of time.
The idea was a deadly alien invasion and my main goal was to create special effects (fire smoke and motion blur) I've used SSS for the alien head
The motion blur was done with a copy of the mesh with a specular set to IOR 1 and a lot of roughness.
The fire effect (as the smoke effect) was made to be compliant with the 2.52 official release (at the begening) and to pass through the opacity Bug with a simple material mix and a second specular set to ior 1. Now with the 2.57 it's more easy to do it !
Great job Refractive team
After many tweaking, I'm very proud of this scene, hope you'll enjoy it !
