Had to see if I could get a prism to work. Very cool feature... and it is fast too!

Finally I'm getting real ice! The ring was created to test the diamond material posted by andrian here: http://www.refractivesoftware.com/forum ... ond#p56047

As the file name indicated, this was a pmc render (what does pmc stand for anyway?) that took 7h 33m for 3745 samples.

The .blend can be had for the asking.

Nice image, but 7 hours is seriously way too long. What kind of lightsources did you use?

Cheers,

Chris

An HDRI image. In order to get a clear image (and this one is quite large as well) I need around 3500 samples.

I have also noticed that this release is very sluggish and unresponsive. For instance, changing render kernels during a render will freeze the interface for a few seconds and the previous kernel selected will continue rendering for a while.

Is your HDRI very high res? And does it have a lot of detail?

The HDRI file isn't all that detailed, actually. In fact, recent renders have been a little quicker. I think it's all the ice that makes takes so long. When fewer or less of the stones are showing, rendering takes a lot quicker.

I couldn't load the 4 toolkit for some reason. 2.47 had been downloaded and I couldn't open, some obscure message... I updated my drivers and everything is cool now and I'm trying a recent file. It is a large yacht on a waterplane and probably doesn't need the pmc mode, but in direct lighting seems faster and fireflies clean up sooner. The few blackbody emitters I use (running lights) seem stronger without changing settings. Looking forward to getting familiar with the new features. Thanks to the team, good on ya!

@ danilius

that looks amazing! would you mind posting the blend file. I have a 580 gtx, and Im curious as to how long it would take to render on my computer. also, Im ccurious as to how you aligned the square shaped diamonds around the spiral. possibly an object offset on the array modifier?

Thanks!

The file should be available shortly on blendswap, and I have made it available here as well. You will have to fiddle with the diamond and gold materials yourself. The diamond material is available in the DB under non-organic|stone, I think. Anyway, I have linked to it previously.

As you will see in the file, I rotated them by hand (position the cursor at centre, rotate around cursor), and fiddled very slightly with the shapes of the rectangular stones, which makes it all the more realistic. In real life, no two diamonds are cut alike, and step cut diamonds are usually different shapes and sizes even in the same carat weight and dimensions.

You can use an empty as the object of an array modifier as well, and that is seriously cool at design time, but it won't look real. Notice how almost every facet looks different in the shot. That's because almost all of them are ;)

Enjoy. Please post the results. I'm curious about your render times.

thank you danilus!

I will try to get a render out tomorrow or friday =) Also, that's very insightful regarding your modeling. Hehe, you definitely have the attention to detail that takes a good render to something amazing!
