I hadn't had the duplicate formulas error message showing for a long time either, like long even before OcDS. But since 2.15 PR5, it has started popping up recently whenever loading scenes with Octane data.

I thought it was weird since I haven't installed any new content or updated my old ones prior to getting the duplicate formula errors.

While I agree that Daz Studio is the program notifying the user of the error, that does not mean that Daz Studio caused the error. The error is caused most often by links to things multiple times in different locations, typically morphs (especially for Genesis). However, if the content does not throw this error with OcDS 1.2 materials, it shouldn't throw it with 2.15 materials, unless the materials are being written differently. Meaning, if I load the liveDb, and use the Black Plastic material on G2F, save and reload in 1.2 and do not get this error, there should be no expectation of doing the exact same thing with 2.15 and getting said error. It's the same mat on the same object, which until now never threw out this error. It does now. The object and material being loaded do not produce the error, but saving and reloading the same does, more often than not. That is not a Daz Studio error, it is a Daz Studio notification of the error in the file saved. That means something changed in the way the info written to saves is being done. I have no idea what it is, and again, it doesn't bother me in any noticeable way, but it is a new behavior that gives every signal of being new to this version of OcDS. To say it is a "Daz Studio Error" is like saying that having a fever means your thermometer is broken.

Looks like a OcDS error for me, I get it a lot with OcDS 2.1RP5 and I've never had it before now.
When I look in the DS log file I see:

Code: Select all

WARNING: fileinput\dzassetdaz.cpp(5450): Duplicate formula found linking OctaneRender_generalVisibility &
OctaneRender_generalVisibilityERC in /xxxx/xxxx/savefile.duf
Have a look in your log file, see what it says.

Yeah same here, once the error was linked to the redspecs shader, but I guess that's basically the same. Do you also get like 40 lines of it?

With regards to stability, do you also feel like rebooting the entire computer helps sometimes? I sometimes seem to get into crash>restart Daz loops that just go on and on until I reboot after which it works fine for a while.

It's "good" to know I'm not the only one with this issue though, I was about ready to start uninstalling/reinstalling things at random.

Confirmed.
The duplicate error appears to be Octane related indeed.

I loaded an old test scene containing a single G2M character (Svengar) and a plane primitive, the duplicate formula notification popped up and I looked at my log file.
There I found 7 lines of:

"WARNING: fileinput\dzassetdaz.cpp(5450): Duplicate formula found linking OctaneRender_generalVisibility & OctaneRender_generalVisibilityERC in /xxxx/xxxx/xxxx.duf"

The only annoyance I can observe so far is minor though, and that is having to click once to get rid of the notification. I haven't experienced more crashes or weirdness. Even before OcDS, this duplicate formula error has never caused any observable stability issues.

In the past, loading Genesis used to produce that error consistently, even after uninstall, reinstall and tidying up my libraries. Since I switched to Genesis 2 figures I haven't had that issue until now.

A complete reboot has never been required for me. Most likely the DazStudio.exe process is stuck in a loop of closing down, so you are in effect opening multiple instances of Daz Studio. I noticed it by watching my RAM, and about 1 time in 10, DazStudio.exe will remain running after "closing" the window and tray icon, etc. This seems more likely to happen when a significantly large file was loaded (meaning a very large or highly complex scene, in your case, likely RedSpec), or if, say, one also had Photoshop, MediaMonkey, and Google Chrome with a few dozen pages up for references, etc. That's also with a bunch of free RAM to spare, so if you have less, it might take less to hit whatever triggers the hang in the process. If you saved before you "closed" Daz Studio, just terminate the process (I'm betting it's still running), give it about 30 seconds to totally kill the process, and you should be good to go.

This is a Daz Studio error. :)
If you're hitting the loop without a background process still running, you may need to look at re-installing (I'd start with Daz Studio Itself, just to eliminate it as the culprit), or a hardware issue.

This was definitely an error that I experienced with one of the DS 4.6 releases on my Win7 12GB RAM PC. Since I've upgraded to Win8 32GB RAM & DS 4.7 this problem seems to have gone away. I think that when a DS scene uses a lot of RAM problems working with DS can occur on machines with less than 16GB RAM. If the first version of DS doesn't close properly it's not possible to use OR in a second version of DS. Check in task manager to see how many versions are running, if more than one then close them both and begin afresh.

Good idea with task manager, I didn't check every time, so I'll make sure to do that. Any other processes other than the DAZ one that needs to be killed? It's also hard to figure out if I'm just imagening this reboot thing, so many things are changing at the same time :-/

Yeah, saving to presets doesn't work :(
Workaround: Delete all models and save scene with the materials you want in "unused materials". Then you can merge that DUF into a new scene and copy to "my presets" temporarily. I actually find this to be a bit less confusing than saving everything as presets as before, as you can make material sets and don't end up with a huge list of jumbled presets.

Maybe we should make a list of known issues, this thread is getting a bit confusing, and we're starting to repeat stuff a lot?
